The rapidly-changing competition and technological innovations have been affecting not only business entities’short-term performances but also their long-term sustainability. In this fast-moving environment, developing and maintaining core competences is a very significant factor in nurturing the competitive strength of businesses. Technological strategy means the set of plans for making strategic decisions regarding technologies in order to attain technological and business-driven goals or the decision-making for use and development of technological capabilities.A technology roadmap is extensively used as a tool to manage the activities of researching and developing technologies and products that can help the business achieve its goals. Most of the past studies on technology roadmaps have only focused on adopting and establishing them, but there have been no empirical studies on utilization and effectiveness of such technology roadmaps. In Korea, there have been some studies examining how technology roadmaps are used by businesses as well as some discussing their future development, but all the studies so far have only considered developing technology roadmaps in special fields or using and furthering them at the national science and industry level.This study defines technology roadmap as a tool that helps formulate plans to acquire core technologies by analyzing the gap between the existing technologies and the most advanced technologies, avert potential technological threats by predicting future technological advances, and capitalize on future business opportunities by developing appropriate strategies. In line with this definition, this study suggests ways to utilize technology roadmaps by analyzing the factors that facilitate use of technology roadmaps and the correlations between them. This study also highlights the importance of using technology roadmaps by empirically analyzing and verifying the correlation between practical use of technology roadmap and the R&D performance, providing motivation for continuous practical use of technology roadmap.
