The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in parenting behavior among mothers by age, education and employment, the differences in self-regulating skills among preschoolers according to gender, and the relationship between the parenting behavior of mothers and their young children's self-regulating skills in an effort to help parents with children in early childhood to form an ideal relationship with the children and have the right understanding of how to step up the development of their self-regulating. And it's also meant to make some suggestions about early childhood education in association with self-regulating, and to boost the efficiency of early childhood education by families and educational institutions.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, as for parenting behavior by age, education and employment, the mothers investigated were statistically significantly different according to age in rational guidance and affection, which were subfactors of parenting behavior. Those under 35 were ahead of the others at the age of 35 and up in those regards.
Second, the preschoolers differed with gender in self-regulating skills. Concerning differences in its subfactors by gender, the preschool girls generally excelled the preschool boys in self-monitoring. No statistically significant gap was found between the two in self-control, but the preschool girls surpassed their counterparts in behavioral control, one of the subfactors.
Third, regarding connections between the parenting behavior of the mothers and the self-regulating skills of the preschoolers, all the subvariables of the young children's self-regulating skills that involved self-evaluation, self-determination, behavioral control and emotionality had a significantly positive correlation to the overall parenting behavior of the mothers.
Fourth, as to the impact of the parenting behavior of the mothers on their children's self-regulating skills, the young children had better self- regulating skills when their mothers provided more rational guidance and were more affectionate, which were the subfactors of parenting attitude.
The meaning of this study lies in looking into the relationship between the self-regulating skills of young children in early childhood, which is one of primary periods for character building and socialization, and their mothers, who exercised a great influence on their early development. And the findings of the study made it clear that mothers should raise their children in an ideal way in order to foster their self-regulating skills. Mothers should be encouraged to pay more attention to their young children's self-regulating skills that are the major basis of socialization, and a wide range of systematic guidelines or parenting programs should be offered by educational institutions to raise awareness of the importance of young children's self-regulating skills and bolster parent education.
