This research has been conducted to discover the general consumption behavior of the alcoholic beverages,the selection behavior in the purchase of the traditional alcoholic beverages and the satisfactions from it among the consumers grouped by theirdrinking styles. The intent of these works are to contribute to the growth of the traditional alcoholic beverages markets by giving necessary data for the establishment of the marketing strategies and development of the products to meet the tastes ofthe consumers.
The surveys have been conducted against a group of people ranging from their 20's to 60's randomly picked from Seoul and Kyunggi area. The duration of the surveys was from April 28th to May 3rd, 2008. A factor analysis has been performed on the drinking styles and the Cronbach's alphavalue among the measurement items was analyzed. SAS 8.2 PC has been used for the analysis.
As for the drinking behavior of the interviewees, the highest numbers of them answered they drink traditional alcoholic beverages 2 to 3 times a month, and 1 to 2 bottles of them each time. Mostof the interviewees appeared to drink with their colleagues at work at Korean style restaurants. The purchase of the traditional alcohols most widely happened at the discount stores (or the marts), and the information on them was most commonly found from the TVs.
5 drinking styles have been identified by the cluster analysis of the scores of 6 factors from the factor analysis. The five styles are namely 'Health Oriented,' 'Tradition Oriented,' 'Safety Oriented,' 'Socio-centered,' and 'Gourmet type.'
As the general findings on the types of drinking, the age group ranging from 20 to 29 showed a strong tendency of being Safety Oriented styled, and the group from 30 to 39 were mainly Tradition Oriented or Socio-centered, while the Tradition Oriented appeared most in the groups over 40. Tradition Oriented style also appeared more in the groups where the people drank the traditional alcoholic beverages more than four times a month. In the groups drinking more than 3 bottles have more of the Tradition Oriented and Socio-centered types, while in the groups taking less than half a bottle or a cup (or shot) had more of Health Oriented types.
As for the drinking companies, the groups drinking with work colleagues, friends, and families have more Traditional Oriented types, while groups drinking with business partners showed more Socio-centered tendencies.
In the selection behavior when purchasing the traditional alcohols, most of the interviewees valued the introverted factors more, and the surveys on the satisfactions after drinking gave higher scores to the introverted factors as well. The designs of the bottles of the traditional alcohols had the lowest scores.
Among the consumers, the male consumer group had more fans of traditional alcohols while the female group tends to the beginners for them. Concerning the marriage, the married had more traditional alcohol lovers.
The age groups under their 30s appeared to have more of the complete strangers with the traditional alcohols, while groups in their 30s and above had the beginners and fans. In terms of jobs, the house wives, so far mostly consist of the female, were mostly complete strangers with the traditional alcohols.
As for the drinking behaviors among different consumer groups, some meaningful differences have been found depending on the amount of drinking per each session, company of drinking, the purchasing place of the traditional alcohols, source of the information regarding the traditional alcohols. In terms of the selection behavior of the traditional alcohol purchase, the experts on the traditional alcohols considered the extrovert factors most, while the introvert factors, cultural factors, and the social factors did not show any meaningfuldifferences.
For furtherconsiderations for the commercialization of the traditional alcohols, more than 85% answered the harmony with the food to be important, and the harmonies between the local food and local traditional alcohols showed the highest marks. As for the improvement of the promotions and marketing activities, many pointed out the lack of the information on the traditional alcohols to be fixed. It was also suggested that the packaging and bottle design are too diversified and therefore need to have some unity among the products.
