    ABSTRACT

    Kim, Ki-bok
    Major in Counseling Psychology
    Graduate School of Education
    Kwandong University
    Advised by Prof. Kim, Hui-Bae

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the Internet addiction of school children to their emotional quotient, or EQ, as their Internet addiction was likely to have an adverse impact on their mental health, including interpersonal relations, personality, behaviors, attitude and social development. It's ultimately attempted to be of use for the development of various guidance and counseling programs to let learners stay away from Internet addiction, and to help improve education for students, parents and teachers.
The subjects in this study were 400 children in their fifth and sixth years of elementary school. A survey was conducted with questionnaires that included three different inventories to respectively assess family environments, online addiction and EQ. After statistical data on mean and standard deviation were obtained, t-test was implemented to track correlational relationship.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the boys were more addicted to the Internet than the girls, and the Internet addiction of the boys made a wide difference to their own EQ, compared to the girls. Secondly, there wasn't significant gap between the fifth and sixth graders in EQ affected by online addiction. Third, the urban dwellers were more addicted than the rural residents, and there was a broader gap between the EQ of the urban dwellers due to Internet addiction than between that of the rural residents. Fourth, the children who have parents working together for a living were more addicted to the Internet than the children who have parents not working together. Fifth, the children who were from the middle and high classes were more addicted than the others who were from the low class, and online addiction made a greater difference to the EQ of the latter group than to that of the former. Sixth, Internet addiction had a similar impact on the EQ of all the school children whose school grades were lower, intermediate and higher. Seventh, as for their outlook on the correlation of online addiction to EQ, non-addiction had a significantly positive correlation to self- awareness, emotional control and positive/optimistic attitude, and addiction had a significantly negative correlation to self-awareness, emotional control, positive/optimistic attitude, empathy and interpersonal relations.
The above-mentioned findings suggested that it's not desirable to forbidding game by force. Instead, parents had better change their prejudice about Internet Game. It would someitmes be better to play game with their children together for getting rid of stress. And, family homepage can be another way to using internet desirably. If their children dont's have the self-control ability, time-control program would be help until they have the self-control ability. To have the hobbies like walking, mountain-climbing, listening music would be hlepful. The government should take steps to remove hazardous information from the Internet in various ways. For instance, legal regulation should be prepared, and it's necessary to promote campaigns to have Internet cafes used in a sound way and prevent childrem from being addicted to the net. School should try to come up with long-term preventive and counseling programs, and parents should pay more attention to their children's access to computers.
Future of Human being is up to the hand of human using the science technology. With increasing of Internet, we should pay attention to prevent internet addicition, education for correct Internet use, and research of positive effect are required.
