The purpose of this study is to explore internet addiction of elementary school students and their self-control, to examine the influence on self-control on internet addiction, and ultimately to make a suggestion about how to cure the internet addiction of different types of student.
The findings of the study are as follows;
First, a statistical analysis showed a significant difference in self-control between an addict group of elementary students and a non-addict group regarding gender. The boys are more addicted to the internet than girls, and the former was eventually less inclined to control themselves than the latter in self-control disposition.
Second, a statistical analysis showed a significant difference in self-control between an addict group of elementary students and a non-addict group regarding academic year. The students in sixth grade are more addicted to the internet than those in fourth grade. The former was eventually less disposed to have themselves in control than the latter.
Third, a statistical analysis showed a significant difference in self-control between an addict group of elementary students and a non-addict group regarding academic performance. The students in low and middle grade performance had more wider range of self-control than those in high grade performance.
Fourth, a statistical analysis showed a significant difference in self-control between an addict group of elementary students and a non-addict group regarding district. The students in the city had more wider range of self-control than those in the countryside.
Fifth, the simple correlation of the internet to self-control is fairly stronger in the addict group than that in the non-addict one.
As a result, this study confirms that those who were more addicted to the internet had a stronger inclination to be insecure emotionally or to behave in an irrational and impulsive manner. And the elementary school students who belonged to this group seemed to be impatient, inconsiderate and lack a rational thinking ability, and they were subsequently likely to have a lot of difficulties adjusting themselves to school life.
Furthermore, this study suggests that it is needed to take measures to reinforce the self-control of elementary school students who are severly addicted to the internet. Efficient extracurricular programs should be developed from diverse perspectives to ease their cognitive, affective and motor-related impulse. For instance, interactive programs geared toward stirring up dynamic exchange among peers, social service programs or nature-friendly hands-on learning programs should be prepared to give students more extended educational opportunities.
