This narrative inquiry explored the dialogical experiences shared by an elementary homeroom teacher and her 5th grade students while working with dialogue journal writing. Today, children are forced to live in the world of 'isolation', and 'decontextualization' mainly due to the lack of dialogicality in Korean society. As a researcher, this puzzle is the one I have oftentimes bumped into throughout my whole life as well.
The participants were my 5th grade elementary students. The duration of this inquiry has proceeded from September 2006 to February 2007. Journal writing in this inquiry had a bilateral type: the dialogue journal between a homeroom teacher and the students, what is called, 'face-to-face story' and the dialogue journal among students in group, what is called, 'from-hand-to-hand story'. Even though the journal writing started with simple aspects, it proceeded and ended with diverse methods, contents, purposes, and ultimately diverse identities.
This inquiry is threaded with narrative methodology from the beginning to the end of the whole research process. Six students and I, as the researcher appear as the main characters in the research text. Min-ju learned not only how to situate herself in diverse contexts but also how to lead a productive communicative life in the middle of her relational contexts between her teacher, parents, and friends. Won-hyung lead an existential life of asking who he is, make awareness of who he is, and practice the awareness in his daily life. Sun-woo colors his life with the tones he has made with the caring experiences share by his peers and me(his homeroom teacher). Jung-yun make a roadmap of hope with her peers, mother, and homeroom teacher by leaping on beyond her handicapped conditions. Yong-jin break out of the window of isolation and enters the world of dialogicality where he is able to form a communicative life with others.
To the students, the process of dialogue journal writing meant the process of dialogical encounter where they reflected, expressed, formed who they are in relation to others. The experiences were also the process of constructing becoming I in diverse relational contexts. Notably, they were able to enter the world of inter-subjectivity by opening their prejudices to the others, which ultimately made it possible to form a caring relationship between teacher and other students.
The dialogue journal writing experiences bestowed a few insights to the researcher as well. First is that the teacher needs to respond to one's student dialogue journals in diverse ways. Second is that the teacher is not only the being who helps one's students but also the being who is often helped by one's students. Third is that the teacher should not wait but go and listen to the students' voices in order to form the conditions with which we all can lead a dialogical way of being.
