This study attempted to develop a group counseling program using the REBT(Rational Emotion Behavior Therapy) and to investigate its effects on the levels of aggression, anger, pareanting stress from raising children, life satisfaction of mothers of blind children.
To attain the purposes of this study, the research questions were develope as follows.
Research question 1: Does the REBT group counseling program have an effect on the reduction of mother's aggression?
Research question 2: Does the REBT group counseling program have positive effects on the mothers' level of anger and on the way of expressing anger?
Research question 3: Does the REBT group counseling program have an effect on relieving stress from raising children?
Research question 4: Does the REBT group counseling program have an effect on enhancing the life satisfaction of mothers of blind children?
For the analytical purpose, 30 mothers of 'S' School for blind children were selected. They were assigned to the experimental group, the comparing group and the control group, and each group had 10 members.
To measure the aggression perceived by the mothers, this study used the measuring instrument that was adapted by Rho An-young (1983) and revised by 4 psychologists based on BDHI(Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory) developed by Buss & Durkey(1957). To determine their level of anger, this study employed the measuring instrument that was revised and utilized by Kim Bak-young(1997) based on TAS(Trait Anger Scale) developed by Spielberger(1985). To determine their stress from raising handicapped child, the QRS scale developed by Herliyd(1974) and abridged by Friedrich(1983) was used. To determine the satisfaction of life, the measuring instrument adapted by Lim Hyo-young(2001) from Hong Eun-sil(1996) was used.
The group counseling program using REBT, which was suitable for mothers of blind children, was developed and provided nine times for the subjects of the experimental group. The program was conducted for 90minutes on every Wednesday. For comparing group, the program for parents of the blind children was given as a lecture, for 90minutes on every Friday. For the control group, nothing had been done.
The pre-test and post-test was conducted for all the groups. To analyze the effectiveness of the test, 'paired t-test' and the 'ANOVA test' were employed among the groups.
Through this process, the following results were obtained.
First, by observing the effect of REBT group counseling program on the reduction of mothers' aggression, it was found that the aggression of members in the experimental group reduced significantly. On the other hand, the comparing group showed no significant change in aggression.
Second, an attempt was made to observe the effect of REBT group counseling program on the positive effect of the level of anger and the way of expression anger. The observation was measured in 4 ways: specific anger, suppressing anger, expressing anger, and controlling anger. As a result, it was found that the specific anger level of the experimental group reduced significantly. For suppressing anger, the anger level of the comparing group was increased significantly. On the other hand, the experimental group and the control group showed no significant change. For expressing anger, the anger level of the experimental group decreased significantly, and the control group showed significant increase. For controlling anger, all three groups showed no significant change but decreased a little.
Third, by observing the effect of REBT group counseling program in a way of relieving stress from raising blind children, the control group showed a little increase while the experimental group showed significant decrease.
Fourth, to observe the effect of REBT counseling program on the progress of the mothers'life satisfaction, there are no significant differences among three groups. However, only the experimental group showed significant increase on the paired t-test because of the large standard deviation.
Overall, it was found that the REBT group counseling program had a significant effect on the progress of the life satisfaction. Therefore, the education program for the parents should be done and REBT group counseling is far better than general education program.
