This study attempted to explore the possibility of applying the Hanaro teaching model to the physical education of girls' middle school alienated from skill-centered physical education by applying the Hanaro teaching model, the practical method of humanities-based physical education, to the physical education of girls' middle school. It was intended to present a new outlet for laying the foundation for life-long physical education by changing the thinking and attitude of schoolgirls towards physical education, raising their participation in physical education and providing them with more desirable physical education.
To attain this goal, the following study questions were set:
First, how should the Hanaro teaching model apply to schoolgirls' physical education?
Second, what thinking and attitude do the schoolgirls have about the Hanaro teaching model?
Third, what thinking and attitude do the physical education teachers have about the Hanaro teaching model?
Fourth, what is the condition for revitalizing the humanities approach to schoolgirls' physical education?
To resolve the study questions, this study selected 10 physical education teachers agreeing to have an in-depth understanding of changing in the behavior of teachers and students over the total period of nine months between Mar, 2007 and Nov, 2007, of which four teachers had taught schoolgirls on the basis of the Hanaro teaching model for more than four years and two teachers had done for one year. Of them, three male teachers and three female teachers were selected.
30 schoolgirls were selected from the five of the following schools: Gahyun Girls' Middle School with an enrollment of 334 in nine classes in three school years located in Jungrang-gu, Seoul; Miryang Middle School located in Kangnam-gu; Miok Middle School located in Songpa-gu; Sojeong Middle School located in Songpa-gu; Boran Middle School and Sojeong Middle School located in Kangseo-gu; Sinae Middle School located in Migeum, Kyonggi Province; Junyoung Middle School located in Anyang, Kyonggi Province; Haeun Middle School located in Anyang, Kyonggi Province; Yumi Middle School located in Sungnam, Kyonggi Province; and Seonyoung Middle School located in Jungrang-gu, Seoul.
For the purpose of data analysis, data were collected through the questionnaire research, in-depth interview, participative observation, video-digital camera shooting, teaching-related documents(learning-teaching proposal, teaching plan, and performance evaluation), and assignments. Of them, the major data collection methods included field study through the in-depth interview, participative observation and reflection logs.
To resolve these study questions, this study analyzed materials relating to teachers' preparation for teaching, teaching operation, material about the activity of teaching organization, teachers' reflection log, students' assignments, students' physical education diary, video shooting, digital camera shooting, cafe management and activity, research meeting activity and the like.
The findings of this study are as follows:
First, the Hanaro teaching model enabled the schoolgirls to approach physical activity in a little more familiar way. Especially, they were induced to take an active part in physical education.
Second, the schoolgirls' thinking and attitude about the Hanaro teaching model improved many schoolgirls' honesty, self-confidence, responsibility and self-reflection in a method of parting from the limit of the physical education subject and changed their thinking of physical education and awareness of physical education teacher.
Third, the physical education teachers' awareness of Hanaro teaching model motivated them to get away from the image of the teacher putting emphasis only on skills and provide students with an opportunity to have diverse experiences as they studied the textbook through attempts to make an integrative approach to it. And the teachers were satisfied with it. Accordingly, physical education teachers are required to make efforts to provide students with an opportunity to learn the school physical education culture in school hours among other things.
Fourth, the condition for revitalizing the humanities approach of schoolgirls to physical education is to induce schoolgirls to become interested in physical education through the humanities approach of diverse methods of expression such as decorating charmingly, making, drawing the picture, reading books(cartoon, essay), writing(letters) and so on. In addition, schoolgirls should be given an opportunity to develop their special ability through the complementation of the making part.
As mentioned above, the Hanaro teaching model is thought to be a valuable teaching model that provide the diversity of physical education for schoolgirls and enables them to know the excitement of physical education sufficiently. The schoolgirls having the sense of repugnance this study came to have a positive thinking of physical education while engaging in diverse activities through the humanities approach. It can be said that its greatest effect was that they came to have a feeling of self-confidence. Especially, spontaneous participation in learning is a very positive effect. In addition, it is thought that it is requisite to develop a variety of activities in which schoolgirls can participate together with a smile, in delight and actively.
