The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of Learning Motive Program on the learned helplessness and self-efficacy of school children.
Two research questions is considered in this study:
First, What influence of Learning Motive Program on the learned helplessness of elementary schoolers?
Second, What influence of Learning Motive Program on the self-efficacy of elementary schoolers?
A pretest was examined, before the research questions, to assess the equivalent of the learned helplessness and self- efficacy of learners the experimental group and the control group. And then, the experimental group participated in the influence of Learning Motive Program test, afterward both groups make a experiment with the posttest of the same as the pretest.
The subjects in this study were 18 students who were selected from among 200 fifth graders in J elementary school located in Siheung, Gyeonggi province. The instruments is used Learned Helplessness Test and Self- Efficacy Test. After the fifth graders took tests by using the instruments, 80 students whose learned helplessness was at a high level were selected, and 18 students who lagged behind in terms of self- efficacy were selected from among them. And an experimental group and control group were randomly organized with nine students each.
Learning Motive Program used in this study was based on Jeon Hyo-chang(2001)'s Learning Facilitation of Motive Program, Yu Young-suk(2001)'s Academic Achievement Motivation Program, Jo Jae- seung(2003)'s Learning Motive Program, Lee Ok-hee(2004)'s Learning Motive Program, Hyeon Ran-ju(2005)'s Learning Motive Program, Nha Nak-gi(2006)'s Learning Motive Program and Choi Jeong-weon(2006)'s Learning Motive Boosting Strategy. All the programs were reconstructed to serve the purpose of this study.
The influence of the improvement motivation of learning program was conducted in 10 sessions during a 10-week period of time, 60 minutes each. SPSS WIN Ver. 12.0 program was employed to make a t-test to look for differences between the experimental and control groups in learned helplessness and self- efficacy.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, Learning Motive Program exercised an influence on relieving the learned helplessness of the school children. Specifically, that brought a significant change to their diffidentness, depressive-negative cognition and poor controllability.
Second, Learning Motive Program exerted an influence on bolstering the self-efficacy of the elementary schoolers. In particular, that brought a significant change to their confidence and self-regulating efficacy.
The conclusion of the study that Learning Motive Program was effective at changing the learned helplessness and self-efficacy of school children suggested that this approach should be more prevailing in school counseling.
