The purpose of this study was to examine the difference of golf coachs according to the traits based on Multidimensional Model of Leadership by Chelladurai (1978), establish a hypothetic model to explain the effect of leadership style of golf coachs on satisfaction of athletes and performance, and make a close inquiry into them with demonstration.
In this study, I selected junior golf athletes who were registered in golf competition in middle and high school at now in 2007 as subjects. To explain detailed, this study made a sample with cluster random sampling method. For the sample, I conducted survey with 420 questionnaires to the athletes participated in 'The 9th nationwide middle and high school golf tournament for the prize of the president of Kyunhee University' that was held from on August 7 in 2007 and collected 390 questionnaires. And also I conducted 300 questionnaires to the athletes participated in 'The 13th students golf tournament for the prize of superintendent of educational affairs in Gyeongi-Do' and collected 263, I also excluded data in which answers were not sincere or vacant from collected 653 questionnaires and then excluded again the data that had outlier through statistical method so at last excluded 95 and collected 558. Through this process, lastly, I selected 219 middle school students and 339 high school students as subjects. Among those 558, female was 186 and male was 372.
In this study, I adjusted and used leadership scale for sports, which was developed by Chelladurai and Saleh (1978) and reversed by Kim byeonghyeon (1990) in Korea, so as to fit for my study. I constructed each item in questionnaire with Likert 5 score scale and for satisfaction of athletes, I adjusted and used the items of satisfaction of athletes by Chelladurai(1984), Widmeyer와 Williams (1991) so as to fit for my study. Each item of them also was constructed with Likert 5 score scale. When analysing the data, I used average score by computing each sub-factor in related items. And I adjusted the questionnaire for performance from 6 items, with advise of specialist, which were used in the study, 'The effect of golf coaches' charismatic leadership based upon identification, credence, and absorbtion in sports on coaching effectiveness' by Jo byeongseop (2003).
For survey, I conducted with self-estimation method and for analysis, I used one-way ANOVA, multiple correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and path analysis applying multiple regression analysis. Through these method and process, I draw the conclusion as followings.
First, there was some difference of awareness in leadership style according to personal trait of golf athletes (gender and lesson term).
Second, there was some difference in satisfaction of athletes according to personal trait of golf athletes (one's school, career of golf, and experience of winning prizes).
Third, there was some difference in performance according to personal trait of golf athletes (career of golf, lesson term of golf, experience of winning prizes, average number of strokes).
Fourth, leadership type of leaders had some effect on satisfaction of athletes. Relative contribution to satisfaction with performance among 5 leadership style of golf coach's was social supporting behavior, democratic behavior in order. The order of relative contribution to satisfaction with coach's behavior among 5 leadership styles of golf coach's was social supporting behavior, training and directive behavior, democratic behavior, and positively compensating behavior . And arbitrary behavior had negative effect.
Fifth, leadership style of coach's had some effect on performance. It showed the result in democratic behavior and in arbitrary behavior among leadership style of golf coach's and performance.
Sixth, as the result of analysing satisfaction of athletes and performance, I got in leader's behavior and in satisfaction with performance.
Seventh, as the result of analysing leadership style of golf coach's, satisfaction of athletes, and performance, the order of relative contribution to satisfaction with performance among 5 leadership styles was social supporting behavior, training and directive behavior, and democratic behavior. The order of relative contribution to satisfaction with leaders was social supporting behavior, training and directive behavior, and democratic behavior, and arbitrary behavior. The order of the effect of leadership style of golf coach's on performance was arbitrary behavior and democratic behavior. And the effect of satisfaction of athletes on performance was satisfaction with performance and satisfaction with coach.
