In modern society of the 21stcentury, the focus of the criteria for human's thoughts and behavior is being changed from rational aspects to emotional aspects. The core tools in marketing have also changed from the function and profit of a product to impressing customers’ intrinsic value, aesthetic desires, and so on. Competitive markets in these days have realized that “something else” is needed to attract the consumers, and are turning their attention to the marketing that can satisfy the consumers’emotional desires. This shows us that emotion has become the most competitive power, and that the development of “emotional industries” will control our cultural competitive power.
In case of precious metals . gem industries, a consumer who visits the store experiences various types of emotions during the shopping by environmental factors. These experiences play a role to convert the consumer’s intention of purchase into a purchase activity, or to delay the purchase. Especially, any positive emotional experience can stimulate a consumer’s intention of impulse buying, which in turn will lead to impulse buying, and this consumer will become a customer of high fidelity of these stores.
Hence, in this study, I have compared and analyzed the positive and negative emotions depending on the customer's personality traits, based on the image-controlling effect of a store in precious metals . gem industries. The effects of these emotional reactions on the intention of impulse buying were examined then. In order to analyze the relationship between a customer's personality traits and emotional reactions, the “image” of a store was used as a moderate variable, which is not seen in previous researches. Also, the intention of impulse buying was used as dependent variable to construct the research model and build hypothesis.
In order to examine the research hypothesis, a survey targeted to consumers in general was made, from which 388 effective data to be used in the analysis was obtained. SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) 10.0 for Windows was used for the statistical processing of the data in this analysis, which contains descriptives analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, regression analysis, and moderate regression analysis.
As a result, it turned out that a customer with agreeableness and conscientiousness personality traits to feel positive emotions more often by the image-controlling of a shop, which in turn seemed to arouse the intention of impulse buying.
On the contrary, openness to experience and extraversion customers seemed to feel negative emotions less often by this effect. Hence, it is necessary to make an effort to reduce those negative emotions and convert them into positive ones, which in turn could stimulate the impulse buying.
