The study has been concentrated around the method of teaching and learning for the new informatics' curriclum. The objective is to make an offer one of educational programming language, 'Squeak' based algorithm learning environment.
Many former researchers demonstrated that algorithm learning has a positive outcome on students' problem-solving abilities. One of the methods for algorithm learning, the 'programming learning' method is highly effective. However, there are numerous constraints in schools for programming learning. THis study attempts to overcome these issues.
One of the educational visual programming languages for easy and interesting learning, Squeak has been selected as a learning tool. The algorithm-learning curriculum according to new informatics' curriclum was developed over a total of 6 sessions. The subjects of this study were students at middle school. They were divided into a control group and an experimental group. The students learned on the basis of equal curriculum but, they used other learning tools through over a total 6 sessions.
According to the pre and post-test results, the two groups showed significant difference in the problem-solving ability and self-efficacy.
In conclusion, the study suggests that Squeak Based Algorithm learning has a positive effect on problem-solving ability and self-efficacy. The study is expected to be applicable as a basis for study on algorithm learning and educational programming languages according to the new informatics' curriclum.
