In coming knowledge and information based society, people will be encouraged to continue learning throughout their lifetime and live in harmony with other members of society more than ever before.
This study examined changes in the music curriculum and problems with the space plan of school music rooms after the seventh amendment of national curriculum. The study intended to improve the quality of music classes by creating spaces for various teaching and learning activities and ICT utilization classes required in the music curriculum, and presenting a space plan that enables the utilization of the spaces for specialty aptitude education after school and lifelong education for residents. Therefore, the study aimed at presenting basic materials that help improve the space plan of music facilities through analysis of the current status of school music facility establishment and maintenance.
With the purpose of presenting the construction plan that enables the establishment of music facilities appropriate for delivering the music curriculum, and the utilization of the audio-visual room, library, computer room, and music room as places for lifelong education, the study carried out the analysis of the status of school music facility establishment and maintenance, and generated the following conclusions.
First, compared with art or physical education curriculum, the music curriculum involves more various activities. Thus it requires more rooms than other subject curriculums. Therefore, in order to generate more various space plans, it is needed to extend the number and size of rooms uniformly defined in the regulation of establishment and management of high schools and below and in a study on criteria for elementary and middle school facilities.
Second, students should be granted with equal educational facilities regardless of district or school size. Given that a high proportion of schools in Jeollanam-do are small scale schools in remote places and islands, the central and municipal governments should make legal changes to provide administrative and financial supports to small schools in remote places and islands.
Third, when deciding space type by total class hours per week, the number of rooms appropriate for delivering the curriculum was decided by the number of classes, not the curriculum. In order to properly carry out the music curriculum composed of two understanding parts, and four activities, such as playing musical instruments, singing, composing, and appreciation, music rooms should be extended. Medium-sized music rooms which enable signing and group study classes, and small music rooms including individual practice rooms for small group study need to be established.
Fourth, the class utilizing ICT includes basic ICT education and ICT utilization education. Especially, under the 7th national curriculum, ICT utilization education is being extended to 10-20% of the class. Thus, it is appropriate to establish the music room close to the computer room, audio-video room, and multi use hall.
Fifth, when devising the construction plan of a school, a resident center should be designed as a single block for specialty aptitude education for students after school and lifelong education for residents. In addition, the library, computer room, music room, and multi use hall should be located close to one another to make it possible for residents to share the facilities with students.
