The study has a purpose of finding out the relationship of immersion in computer games to impulsiveness and aggression of elementary school students. Based on such purpose, the study created the following questions.
First, is there any difference in the playing conditions of computer games by gender and grade?
Second, is there any difference in the immersion in computer games by gender and grade?
Third, is there any difference in the immersion in computer games by playing conditions of games?
Fourth, is there any difference in the impulsiveness by immersion in computer games?
Fifth, is there any difference in the aggression by immersion in computer games?
Sixth, is there any correlation among immersion in computer games, impulsiveness and aggression?
The study selected fourth graders and sixth graders in an elementary school locted in Wonju-si, Gangwon-do as the study subjects. Total of 500 students were surveyed. Out of these students, 30 that responded ineffectively were excluded. Therefore, the subjects that were analyzed were 470 students(235 fourth graders and 235 sixth graders; 248 males and 222 females).
As for the analysis tools, the study used the computer use investigation sheet developed by the Research Center for Korean Youth Culture(1998) and used by Eun-Ae No(2004) after revising and improving it. For the immersion in computer games, the study reused the test sheet which Seong-Hye Park(2001) modified and improved based on the Internet Addition Survey created by the Center For On-Line Addiction of Young. To test the impulsiveness, the study used the test sheet that was used and modified Ju-Sik Lee(2002) based on the Barrat Impulsiveness Scale II created by Barratt and translated into Korean by Hyeon-Su Lee(1992) and the Test of Eysenck(1984). As for the aggression test, the study modified and improved the test sheet restructured and used by Ju-Sik Lee(2002) based on the test which Hye-Suk Ahn(2002) created for elementary school students in higher grades.
In order to analyze the collected data, the study obtained %, M and SD according to the characteristics of each question using the SPSS 11.0(K) for Windows. Also, the study applied the chi-squire test, t test, one-way ANOVA(F test) and Scheffe's Post-Hoc to analyze the differences among the groups and by background variables. Also, the Pearson's correlation analysis was carried out.
Through this study process, the following results were produced.
First, the study analyzed the elementary school students' playing conditions of computer games and in result, 32.1% had been playing computer games for less than 1-3 years. There was a significant difference by gender(χ2=22.493, p<.001) and the male students generally showed longer playing time. As for the places where the students usually played computer games, most of them responded living room or places under the supervision of parents(48.7%) and the student's room(44.7%). There was a significant different by gender(χ2=6.151, p<.05) and the male students(8.9%) used internet cafes more than the female students(4.1%), and the female students used computers in living rooms or places under the supervision of parents more than the male students. As for the average playing hours per week, the male students played more than the female students and there was a statistically significant difference(χ2=19.026, p<.001). 40.4% of the students responded that they played computer games for less than an hour each day and the male students spent more time playing computer games than the female students, and there was a statistically significant difference(χ2=26.095, p<.001). As for their reasons for playing computer games, 49.1% of the students said "For entertainment" and 18.5% of the male students responded that they play games to gain achievements by raising points and levels; the result was relatively higher than the result of female students(6.8%)(χ2=30.391, p<.001). Most of the students(78.9%) enjoyed online games and there was no great difference by gender. 33.6% of the students preferred action arcade games and the students showed a significant difference in their preference by gender(χ2=117.509, p<.001). The male students preferred action arcade games(42.3%) and simulation games(17.3%) whereas the female students preferred other games(42.8%) such as Tetris, puzzle games and so on.
By grade, most of the fourth graders had played computer games for less than 1-3 years(44.7%) whereas most of the six graders had played less than 3-5 years(34.5%) and more than 5 years(27.2%). This shows that the sixth graders has longer playing time and there was a statistically significant difference(χ2=47.453, p<.001). There was a significant difference in the students' average playing hours per day. Most of the fourth graders played computer games for less than an hour(51.5%) but most of the sixth graders played computer games for 1-2 hours(46.0%) so this shows that the average playing time of the sixth graders is longer compared to the fourth graders(χ2=11.236, p<.05). As for their preferred game genre, the 6th graders(84.6%) played online games more than the fourth graders(73.2%) and there was a statistically significant difference(χ2=9.329, p<.01). There was no meaningful difference in places where they play computer games, average playing days in a week, reasons for playing computer games, preferred game types and so on.
Second, the elementary school students' immersion level in computer games produced an average of 39.61, which was not very high. By gender, the male students(M=44.07) showed to have higher immersion level than the female students(M=34.62) and the difference was statistically significant(t=8.606, p<.001).
As for the immersion level by grade, the sixth graders(M=42.20) showed a higher immersion level than the fourth graders(M=37.01) and they showed a statistically significant difference(t=-4.456, p<.001).
Third, the study looked into the difference in the students' immersion in computer games by their playing conditions and there was a significant difference in the elementary school students' immersion in computer games depending on years of playing games(F=22.124, p<.001). The post-hoc result illustrated that students who had played computer games for more than 5 years(M=46.64) showed a higher immersion level in computer games than the students who had played for less than 1-3 years(M=37.01). This shows that generally students with longer years of playing computer games have a higher immersion level in computer games. Also, there was a significant difference in the immersion level by place of playing computer games(F=5.099, p<.001). The post-hoc on the result was carried out and in result, the students who played computer games in their own rooms and living room or places under the supervision of parents(M=38.57) showed a lower immersion level in computer games than the students who played in other places such as internet cafes(M=46.35). The students showed a significant difference in their immersion in computer games by playing days per week(F=31.165, p<.001) and generally more days of playing computer games resulted a high immersion level. The students' average playing hours per day also resulted a significant difference in the immersion level(F=61.592, p<.001). The post-hoc result showed a significant difference among all groups and generally students that played computer games a lot everyday showed more serious immersion level in computer games. The students showed a significant difference in their immersion in computer games depending on their reasons for playing(F=7.675 p<.001). The immersion level of students that played for achievements such as raising points and levels(M=45.00) was the highest. The students who enjoyed playing online games(M=40.57) showed a higher immersion level than the students who enjoyed playing offline games(M=36.00) and the difference was statistically significant. Therefore, it can be seen that students that play online games has more serious immersion level in computer games than students that play offline games. The study looked into the immersion level in computer games depending on the game types preferred by the students. In result, the students that usually played other games such as Tetris, puzzle games, QuizQuiz and etc.(M=30.99) showed the least immersion level in computer games compared to the students that play action arcade games(M=43.48), MUD & MUG games(M=43.19), role playing games(M=41.05) and simulation games(M=40.12) (F=16.161, p<.001).
Fourth, the study analyzed if there was a difference in the students' impulsiveness depending on their immersion in computer games. The result showed that general impulsiveness was higher with the students with a higher immersion level(M=2.41) than the students with a lower immersion level(M=1.73), and there was a statistically significant difference(t=14.560, p<.001). The result was again analyzed by its sub factors and in result, there was a significant difference in all factors such as perceiving impulsiveness(t=12.317, p<.001), exercising impulsiveness(t=12.470, p<.001), unplanned impulsiveness(t=12.074, p<.001) and so on. This shows that the group with a higher immersion level has higher impulsiveness. Therefore, it can be known that the students' impulsiveness greatly depends on the students' immersion in computer games.
Fifth, the study investigated if there was a difference in the students' aggression depending on their immersion in computer games. The result showed that the group of a high immersion level(M=2.35) had a higher aggression than the group of a low immersion level(M=1.64), and there was a statistically significant difference(t=14.533, p<.001). The result was again analyzed by sub factors and in result, there was a significant difference in every factor such as physical aggression(t=10.547, p<.001), verbal aggression(t=11.944, p<.001), indirect aggression(t=11.900, p<.001) and negative aggression(t=13.391, p<.001). In other words, students with a high immersion level in computer games have higher aggression than students with a low immersion level. Therefore, it can be said that the aggression of students greatly depends on their immersion in computer games.
Sixth, a correlation analysis was carried out to figure out the correlation of immersion in computer games to impulsiveness and aggression of the students. In result, the students' immersion in computer games and impulsiveness showed a result of r=.704(p<.001), which indicated relatively high positive correlation. It also had a high positive correlation with the sub factors of impulsiveness such as perceiving impulsiveness(r=.633, p<.001), exercising impulsiveness(r=.627, p<.001) and unplanned impulsiveness(r=.610, p<.001). This shows that a high immersion level in computer games results greater impulsiveness. Next, the study analyzed the correlation between the students' immersion in computer games and aggression. The result was r=.672(p<.001), showing that they had a high positive correlation and the students' immersion in computer games showed a high positive correlation with all the sub factors of aggression such as physical aggression(r=.551, p<.001), verbal aggression(r=.601, p<.001), indirect aggression(r=.541, p<.001), and negative aggression(r=.631, p<.001). This also indicates that a high immersion level in computer games increases the aggression tendency of students. Therefore, it can be said that when the students' immersion in computer games increases, the possibility of increased impulsiveness and aggression increases.
The study analyzed the relationship of immersion in computer games to impulsiveness and aggression of elementary school students and concluded that higher immersion in computer games results higher impulsiveness and aggression of students. The study result can be meaningful as it can be used as basic data for teaching the students the proper application of computers at school.
