This study indicated the effect of preventive group art therapy on the sociality and self-concept in children. The subjective was selected by six-year-old 20 children from a O kindergarten located in Jeon ju City as for a test group of 10 children and a control group of 10 children. The study period was seven weeks (13 application times) from March 19 to April 30, 2007. The tools applied in this study were the KSD, K-HTP, sociality test, and self-concept test. In addition, the obtained data was statistically processed by using the Mann-Whitney U test and SPSS 10.1 program.
The conclusion of this study can be expressed as follows:
First, the preventive group art therapy applied in this study was effective to improve the sociality of children. In the score of sociality obtained from the six-year-old children in the test and control group showed significant differences. Also, it represented a significant difference in the KSD figure analysis.
Second, the preventive group art therapy applied in this study was effective to improve the self-concept of children. In the score of self-concept obtained from the six-year-old children in the test and control group showed significant differences. Also, it represented a significant difference in the K-HTP figure analysis. It means that this therapy provides a chance that considers the relationship with others for such children who represents a strong thought of self-centered attitude and verify that they can recognize their own identity through the self-expression using art.
As mentioned above, it is evident that the preventive group art therapy program improved the sociality and self-concept of children. It is able to present self-changes through their own thought and expression. This study is also considered as a meaningful attitude that provides theoretical bases in a change from the education for improving social functions in children to the education for self-consideration. Moreover, it is useful to propose the educational possibility in a preventive level of self-concept and to provide experimental bases.
