The last words Jesus spoke before ascending to heaven were "...go and make disciples of all nations..." and "and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Those were his directions for mission and still command us to spread and practice love of Christ beyond geographical, national, racial, cultural, social, and generational boundaries and limitations.
Thus this study set out to embrace as children of God the multicultural families, whose number had recently increased in Korea, and invite them to the Gospels instead of the negative perceptions and exclusive attitudes in society. It can sow the seeds of the Gospels for the nation as well as for the multicultural families and foreign workers in Korea.
The Korean society has recently seen a growing number of multicultural families, which are usually formed by Koreans marrying foreign spouses and then having kids with them. The biggest factor to drive the increase of international marriages and children of mixed blood is economy on the global level. The major factors found in Korea include the unbalanced sex ratio, increase of single women, and economic difficulties.
The growing number of multicultural families has attracted the attention of the society. The government has set up nation-level general countermeasure, many support groups were formed, and there have been active research efforts on the matter. However, the reality is not amicable to the multicultural families; most of the people exhibit a negative perception and exclusive attitude towards them just because they have different skin colors and facial features from them and belong to the lower class in the social and economic terms. Even the churches seem to join them in that regard.
But it cannot be clearer that we are wrong according to the Bible, which says that love of Christ is not limited to a certain nation, race, or group but every race and nation deserves it. The church in the midst of love of Christ is obliged to share the love with them, and that's part of its mission.
The Bible contains ideas of mission from the Genesis to the Book of Apocalypse of St. John. Especially, the Israeli didn't forget that they had to wander around as well, treated and embraced the Gentiles with hospitality based on the Ger consciousness, and bestowed favors on the Gentiles who tended to be alienated and suffer from shortage of all kinds of necessities. The teaching of Jesus during his public life also reveals that God's love is the core principle of both the mission for the Jews and the mission for the Gentiles. Paul also devoted himself to the missionary works for the salvation of the Gentiles, calling himself the "Apostle of the Gentiles." In the New Testament, the Christians are described as wanderers in this land since their true home lies in the distant land of God. In the old days, the Christians moved here and there as Diaspora, and their life clearly resembles that of today's immigrants.
As a matter of fact, the multicultural families we see and meet around today are wanderers and lead a difficult life as Diaspora themselves. And they do have the scared human rights since they also look just like God. We are all "the family of God" in the eyes of God regardless of Koreans or foreigners.
There are a couple of requirements for the mission for multicultural families; first, they should arm themselves with professionalism. Second, it's crucial to maintain continuity. And third, there should be multidimensional cooperations among them if they are to have some effects. Connections and collaborations should be found among the various groups and churches in the same ministry, autonomous groups and churches of foreigners, missionaries and missionary groups in their home countries, and the government bodies.
They should overcome such obstacles as unnecessary competition and conflicts among their different religious bodies by exchanging concerned information and working together. Once they regard the problems facing the multicultural families as their own and practice God's love in earnest, they will be able to reap great results of a positive mission.
It's time to embrace Christ with the heart instead of the conceptual framework in the head. If we give love of Christ and the Gospels to multicultural families, raise them as the disciples of Christ, and send them out into the world, they will do more effective missionary works than any other trained missionaries.
