This research is about the quality of friendship by self-perceived competence and peer acceptance of school-aged children. Through this research, I specifically try to look for type of school-aged children's peer acceptance, children's self-perception competence and general tendency from quality of friendship, how each genders affect types of children's peer group acceptance. And also I try to look for how the types of school-aged children's peer acceptance give a difference to children's self-perceived competence, how the types of school-aged children's peer acceptance give a difference to quality of friendship and how the children's self-perceived competence give a different quality of friendship.
For this research, I surveyed grade 5 and 6 public elementary school students who live in Seoul, Kyonggi and Incheon area. The survey questions consisted the quality of friendship, children's self-perceived competence and peer acceptance of school-aged children. At the end, I collected 554 surveys from the survey targets and tried to find frequency analysis, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, Cronbach's Alpha calculation, χ² - test, independent type t - test, changing quantity of member analysis, and Scheff test, through SPSS WIN11.5 program.
The followings are the main results from this research.
Firstly, the type of school-aged children's peer acceptance came out in order of "normal child", "popular child", "expulsive child", "isolated child", "both-sided characteristics child" and in later research, "both-sided characteristics child" was excepted. In children's self-perceived competence sector, social ability of children's self-perceived competence came out higher than physical ability of children's self-perceived competence, overall one's ego perception and intellectual ability of children's self-perceived competence. Positive quality of friendship had higher average than negative quality of friendship.
Secondly, types of school-aged children's peer acceptance didn't give much meaning in children's gender difference. But in children's self-perceived competence sector, children's physical self-perceived competence and total self-perceived competence showed the difference in children's gender. Also positive quality factors and negative quality factors of friendship showed the difference in children's gender. Boys had higher physical and total self-perceived competence than girls. Also positive quality factors showed more often in girls than boys and negative quality factors showed more often in boys than girls.
Thirdly, children's self-perceived competence showed the difference in type of school-aged children's peer acceptance. In children's intellectual self-perceived competence, "exclusive child" had lower level than "normal child" and "popular child". In children's social self-perceived competence, "popular child" had higher level than "expulsive child" which was located in the lowest level of child's self-perceived competence group. And in children's physical self-perceived competence, "expulsive child" had lower level than "popular child". In overall one's ego perception and the total of those above self-perceived competence showed "expulsive child" had lower level than other groups.
Fourthly, positive and negative quality of friendship showed meaningful difference in type of school-aged children's peer acceptance. In positive quality of friendship, "expulsive child" showed lower level than other groups and "popular child" had higher level than "isolated child". In negative quality of friendship, "expulsive child" showed higher level than other groups.
Fifthly, positive and negative quality of friendship showed meaningful difference in children's self-perceived competence. Groups that had higher self-perceived competence showed higher level of positive quality of friendship. And groups that had lower self-perceived competence showed higher level of negative quality of friendship.
Sixthly, positive and negative quality of friendship showed meaningful difference between the children with higher and lower level of self-perceived competence by type of school-aged children's peer acceptance. In each type of school-aged children's peer acceptance, positive quality of friendship showed higher in higher level of self-perceived competence than lower level of self-perceived competence and "expulsive child" group's self-perceived competence had lower level than other groups. Also "popular child" with higher level of self-perceived competence group had higher quality of friendship than "expulsive child" with high level of self-perceived competence group, "isolated child" with low level of self-perceived competence and "normal child" with low level of self-perceived competence. And "normal child" with high level of self-perceived competence had higher quality of friendship than "isolated child" with low level of self-perceived competence and " expulsive child" with high level of self-perceived competence. Finally "expulsive group" with low level of self-perceived competence higher negative quality of friendship than other groups except "isolated child" with low level of self-perceived competence and "expulsive child" with higher level of self-perceived competence. Also "popular child" with higher level of self-perceived competence had lower negative quality of friendship than "expulsive child" with higher level of self-perceived competence.
This research showed that the quality of friendship can be affected by children's self-perceived competence and peer acceptance of school-aged children and the type of school-aged children's peer acceptance could effect the quality of friendship by the level of children's self-perceived competence. During the course of the research on the relationship of children of school age, it showed that there is difference in children’s perception and the quality of the relationship of their age depending on the type of reception. It also showed there is difference in the quality of the relationship of their age according to the level of perception in the type of reception and also depending on the children’s level of perception.
