Based on a critical question ‘how much local festivals held in the interest of local development and economic profit may have effects on local images and local inhabitants' quality of life, this study set further questions to gather and analyze resulting data. This study set the following further questions:
First, could the more local festivals lead to the better local community images?
Second, could the more local festivals lead to the better quality of life in local inhabitants?
Third, would local festivals play a parametric role in the effects of local inhabitants' affection for their community on their local images and quality of life? The purpose of this study is to give answers to these questions and thereby suggest which efforts and solutions are required with regard to possible relationships between local images and quality of life in favor of successful and sustainable local festivals.
To meet these goals, this study verified some hypotheses. As a result, it came to the following findings:
First, in terms of a question ‘could the more local festivals lead to the better local community images?', it was found that local government's positive efforts for more local festivals through cultural promotion, supports, production and image works could lead to the better local images.
Second, in terms of another question ‘could the more local festivals lead to the better quality of life in local inhabitants?', it was found that only some age group(30's) expected positive effects upon quality of life, while majority of respondents didn't show any positive expectation.
Third, in terms of the last question ‘would local festivals play a parametric role in the effects of local inhabitants' affection for their community on their local images and quality of life?', our respondents mostly expected that the more local festivals could lead to the more affection of local inhabitants for their community, and it was found that the more affection for local community leads to the better local images and quality of life.
It was found that the more cultural supports from local government could lead to the more affection of local inhabitants for their community, and local festivals play a parametric role in the associations between local images and affection. It is found that ongoing local festivals fail to reflect or respect local community's interests, so it is necessary to prepare possible solutions to motivate local community to take positive part in local festivals, while extra economic activities and resulting profits can be created in favor of local community. Local festivals motivating local inhabitants to improve their quality of life with affection for their community are possibly efficient management distribution business. In particular, it is important to make differentiated strategies so that our local festivals may have their own competitive edges under competitive promotion and organization. And it is also required to fully analyze customer needs and thereby hold local festivals to meet visitors' needs for the benefit of long sustainable and globalized festivals. It is necessary to establish best local festival plans in consensus and collaboration with local community, and seek promising promotional ways focused on visitors.
In one aspect, local festivals planned and held by local government may be misunderstood as event to determine local governor's political stream in near future. So it will be necessary to unroll illumination, promotion and education campaign so that real purpose of local festival, i.e. better local development and economy can be well communicated into local community in favor of their participation.
Hampyeong Butterfly Festival, a typical local festival of Hampyeong region, promotes and sells environment and nature in harmony with bugs and human. It is an advanced and differentiated management distribution business that allows visitors to feel and study nature as a good with local inhabitants, and also sells the ecologic culture of butterfly and other bugs in favor of children's hope and dream. If local live environment, heritage of nature and local community's positive and collaborative participation lead to running cultural distribution business called festival, it is expected that our local inhabitants will have higher community senses including better local images and quality of life based on their self-esteem, identity and affection than before.
