The purpose of this study is to investigate level of the recognition and the practice of transition education among teachers for special classes in middle schools and to provide a fundamental data for an improvement of the education.
The data for this study was gathered via a questionnaire distributed to 63 of the middle school special class teachers in the city of Busan. Total of 58 replied questionnaires were used for the statistical analysis in this study.
T-tests and ANOVA means different statistical analyses are used for the interval and ratio data. Other gathered data are analyzed by the cross-tab analysis and show the values of Pearson chi-square.
This study produced two principal findings.
First, the results show that the level of recognition of the transition education among teachers for special classes in middle schools is high relatively.
The transition education is recognized as aggregated service activities that can promote the quality of future life for the handicapped, and the recognition difference is not affected by the teachers' demographic variables.
Second, the transition education in the middle school special classes is not well practiced. Shortages of facilities and programs for the transition programs are found as serious problems in the planning and the practice of the education.
This study suggests several recommendations as follows for the better future transition education.
First, develop and distribute various transition programs according to the level of disabilities through a government administrated department.
Second, the purpose of this study was to investigate level of recognition and the practice of education among teachers for special classes in middle schools. For a better future study, a qualitative research using the students with disabilities in this area is required.
Third, this study is limited to the city of Busan. In the future study, a nation-wide study is suggested to compare the research results.
