This paper aimed to find out the effect of mother-child group art therapy through modeling activity on mother-child interaction and Aggressive behavior of children. From April 2007 to Nov 18, 2007, the process of this study was conducted through the object selection, pretest, the performance of mother-child group art therapy sessions, and post-test in order.
This study included second- to third-grade children at an elementary school in D city with their mothers. Most of them become mainly troubled with problematic mother-child interaction triggered by kids' Aggressive behavioral patterns, constantly suffering from stresses from upbringing. Four couples of mother and child were selected among children who gained more than 70T score in the Aggression level of the Korean-Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL).
The mother-child group art therapy sessions were conducted 17 times in all by twice a week, 90 minutes each time through modeling activities. Modeling activity was divided into three like the introductory part (10 minutes), the main part (50 minutes), and the finishing part (30 minutes). Among which the main part was sub-categorized with the two section in large like group forming stage (intimacy formation) and mother-child interaction stage (media search, interest inducement, redefinition of family, acceptance and understanding). In the finishing apart, some free playing time was given to observe Aggressive behavioral degrees of kids. As a study tool, the CBRS checklist created by Mahoney in 1999 and then verified and researched by Jeong-mi Kim and others in 2000 was used to gauge factors of activity-behavior, and cooperation shown during the art therapy sessions of this study. And through performing Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) before and after the session period, changes in interaction could be measured. In addition, based on the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory(BDHI) created in 1957, the observation note was refashioned applicable to children through picking up behavior patterns most frequently done by kids out from sub questions to research Aggressive behavioral degrees during the free playing time.
The result of this study are as follows.
First, group art therapy through modeling activity enhances mother-child interaction, positively affecting factors of activity-behavior and cooperation, and interaction in KFD.
Second, mother-child group art therapy through modeling activity plays a positive role in reducing kids' Aggressive behaviors (physical, verbal, and indirect Aggressive tendency).
This study made it clear that the mother-child group art therapy through modeling activity could help mother-child interaction enhanced through spending time together, and share intelligent, emotional sources by improving intimacy and positive views. In addition, this can make emotional factors affecting Aggressive behaviors controled and inhibit impulses through properly expressing their inside, which can successfully lead to kids' Aggressive behaviors significantly reduced.
In a time of increasing counseling rates about problems with kids, this study can have a meaning by suggesting the need of mothers' active participation in improvement efforts which can prevent problems with kids from going worse and the potential of mother-child group art therapy effectively used in diverse counseling and psychological treatment programs.
