This study sees how the level of life environment that children of multicultural families recognize affects maladjustment to the school and tries to find out a plan of intervention for prevention of their maladjustment to the school in terms of social welfare for the school.
A survey was done with the sample of 197 students attending more than 40 elementary schools in Busan city, Daegu city, and Gyeongbuk area and the following is the conclusion from analysis of the survey result.
First, the extent of which children in multicultural families are not adjusted to the school is lower than the middle. Second, it shows that the level of life environment of children of multicultural families depends on parents’ concern in the home surroundings, relationship to friends in the school surroundings Third, according to children’s features of multicultural families, the difference of maladjustment to the school tells that there is meaningful difference in the case of sex and the mothers’ academic background but not in the case of a grade, a parents’ mother country, and the fathers’ academic background. Fourth, the difference of maladjustment to the school according to cultural features of children of multicultural families tells that the more they think their appearance different from other people, the more serious the extent of maladjustment to the school is. However, there is not meaningful difference in case of children’s ability in Korean, parents’ ability from other countries in Korean, children’s ability in the parents’ language, language using within home. Lastly, it is an economic standard of living under physical home surroundings, an attitude of parents’ support under emotional and mental home surroundings, the relationship between classes and friendship under school surroundings, and community surroundings that have effect on maladjustment to the school among types of standard of living in the study.
The following proposes a practicable plan in terms of social welfare of the school for the prevention of maladjustment to the school based on the result of this study.
First, connection with and distribution of the resource of community is required for supporting tuition fee and living cost which are necessary to the economic life of multicultural families. Second, parents with children of multicultural families should be given customized training like skills for supporting children or consultation. In addition, they need to have a chance to get along with parents of general families and exchange information of children’s education. Third, multicultural education should be introduced to teachers, principals as well as children of general families lest children of multicultural families should suffer discrimination, prejudice, bullying, and so forth due to the difference of their appearance. Lastly, children of multicultural families need to take lessons on types and contents of community resources in order to make full use of community environment. Especially, school social worker who in charge of social welfare of the school always pay attention to and utilize programs or benefits sponsored by a nation or private organizations for children of multicultural family.
