The purpose of this study lies in the realization of substantive elementary gymnastics classes by providing fundamental materials on measures to improve physical education courses of elementary schools more substantially and effectively. The materials are prepared by research and analysis of perception of teachers on gymnastics classes of elementary schools and the perception is subdivided into a factor of knowledge and actual skill of gymnastics, a factor of physical training effect, a factor of quantities of gymnastics equipments, a factor of safety of gymnastics equipments, a factor of appropriateness of gymnastics education courses and a factor of problems of gymnastics education courses.
To pursue the purpose of this study, 150 teachers in charge of classes of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year at Chilgok-gun Gyeongsangbuk-do were surveyed and 145 questionnaires, excluding erroneously written ones and irrelevant ones, were analyzed for this study.
The collected surveys were compared and analyzed, using the SPSS program, on each aspect of the 6 factors of perception - a factor of knowledge and actual skill of gymnastics, a factor of physical training effect, a factor of quantities of gymnastics equipments, a factor of safety of gymnastics equipments, a factor of appropriateness of gymnastics education courses and a factor of problems of gymnastics education courses. Statistics of frequency, t-test and analysis of covariate for each factor of perception were undertaken for the purpose of comparison and analysis.
Following conclusions are induced from the comparison and analysis of the survey.
First, regarding knowledge and actual skill of gymnastics, most teachers regarded they have insufficient knowledge and actual skill on rhythm calisthenics. Also male teachers were more affirmative than female teachers on their knowledge and actual skill on rhythm calisthenics and teachers in schools with a gymnasium were more affirmative than the others on their knowledge and actual skill on rhythm calisthenics.
Second, regarding educational effect of gymnastics classes, most teachers responded positively on the effect regardless of sex, career, school year in charge, with or without a gymnasium, and they acknowleged that the classes develop physical fitness, sense of balance, quick response, flexibility, interests in the classes and gladness.
Third, regarding quantities of gymnastics equipments for gymnastics classes, most teachers responded quantities of the equipments are enough while female teachers and teachers in schools with gymnasium were more affirmative on this matter.
Fourth, regarding safety of gymnastics equipments, most of them answered that the safety of horizontal bar is insufficient. Different level of perception was noticed among teachers in charge of different school years. Teachers in charge of relatively higher years responded more negatively.
Fifth, regarding appropriateness of gymnastics education courses, most teachers considered that the contents and hours of physical education courses are appropriate for each level of school year. Teachers in charge of the 3rd school year and female teachers were relatively negative on this perception.
Sixth, regarding problems of gymnastics education courses, most teachers recognized that gymnastics classes should be focused on the education of fundamental capabilities of gymnastics and the most prominent problem of gymnastics classes is the fact that teachers are not experienced enough in teaching gymnastics. Additionally, they responded that training opportunities for teachers should be widened.
