This study is a single subject experimental design intended to investigate the effect of paper formative activities on maladjustment behaviors of children with ADHD, with behaviors of the ADHD children such as the impulsive behavior, the Inattentive behavior, the hyperactive behavior.
Participants of this study were 3 ADHD children in the 4th grade of S Primary School located in Daegu City and multiple-baseline design across subjects was employed as an experimental design. Experiments were conducted 3 sessions a week (18 sessions in all) during a period of 6 weeks from March second to May 11th, 2007.
Paper formative activities used in this study were originated from ‘The Effects of Paper Formative Activity on the Reduction of Attention-Deficit and Impulsiveness in Children with ADHD(Bong-hee Kim, 2003)’ and ‘A Study on Formative Play Program for Creative Children’s Artistic Expressions (Chung Mi-kyung, 2002)’ and a art textbook the fourth grade and re-organized by the author of this study, considering ages and artistic activity level of subjects.
To analyze changes in maladjustment behavior of the ADHD children as a dependent variable, observations were performed. Following 40-minute videotaping by camcorder of regular art class in period 2 in the baseline and maintenance phase and paper formative activities in the arbitration phase, respectively, frequency of such behaviors as the impulsive behavior, the Inattentive behavior, the hyperactive behavior was measured and scored 8 times every 5 minutes by means of interval recording, and then processed in 3 methods; chart, graph, and qualitative analysis.
On the basis of the findings from this study, following conclusions were generated.
First, the paper formative activities made an effect on reduction of the impulsive behavior of the ADHD children. While cutting and attaching and folding and wrinkling and touching with paper, their easy material, they were naturally able to get focused on a given task. so they had themselves to be patience, which, in turn, is considered to contribute to reduce the impulsive behavior.
Second, the paper formative activities made an effect on reduction of the Inattentive behavior of the ADHD children. It is considered that paper formative activities on a variety of topics helped children get focused on a given task with fun and thereby they reduced their careless behaviors.
Third, the paper formative activities were helpful on reduction of the hyperactive behavior of the ADHD children. This implies that paper formative activities on the topic of their interest helped increase their enthusiasm for a given task and patience and in turn children showed a decrease in such behaviors as fidgeting with objects, scribbling, or sitting absent-mindedly in class.
