The purpose of this study is to find the effect of plastic arts therapy on the ADHD children's attention concentration and which has dependent variables such as attention concentration time, attention-deficit activity and finishing tasks.
To achieve this purpose, the design of multiple baseline across subjects was used for three ADHD children who were fifth graders at D elementary school in Daegu Metropolitan City. The period of test in this study was from March 2 to May 20, 2007. Test was conducted three times a week, sixteen times in total.
Plastic arts therapy used in this test, which was modified by conductor of this research, referred to the arts therapy organization's program which is based on Lowenfeld's theory.
To estimate degrees of attention concentration behaviors, observation method invented and installed by McConnell by and his colleagues was used.
Interval recording was used in this test. It takes five minutes in total for every observations and it is divided into each thirty seconds. Twenty five seconds are used for observing, last five seconds are for recording. To investigate the overall changes in the ADHD children's activity, the subjects' speech and activity found in the study scenes were observed and qualitatively analyzed.
From the results of this study, conclusions were drawn as follows:
First, plastic arts therapy was effective in growing the amount of time during which ADHD children concentrated their attention. Floor and clay don't make children feel pressures of failure in molding. It makes children have confidence and sense of accomplishment so it makes children feel familarity and curiosity. Thus, their attention concentration improved.
Second, attention concentration training was effective in reducing the ADHD children's attention-deficit activity. Children can feel comfortable when experiencing and enjoying their various senses using diverse stuffs freely. It helps children reduce their attention-deficit activity.
Third, plastic arts therapy was effective in enhancing the ADHD children's attention concentration and raising their activity of finishing their tasks. Finishing tasks step by step from easy level, children feel confident in success. It makes children finishing their tasks many times. So it was effective in improving their activity of finishing tasks.
