The purpose of this paper is showing that using Newspaper is effective in Thematic Integrated Learning on children's learning interest and Self-Directed learning ability. We established following hypothesis based on previous studies.
Hypothesis I : Using newspaper in Thematic Integrated Learning will improve children's interest on learning.
Hypothesis II : Using newspaper in Thematic Integrated Learning will be effective on children's Self-Directed learning ability.
In this work, study target is 20 second-year elementary children in K public library in Seoul. We choose them as a testee, and arrange them in test group and control group randomly. And we apply Thematic Integrated Learning using Newspaper to the test group, and we apply program using storybook to the control group 16 times during 8 week. We use learning interest test developed by Renzulli(1977), translated by Lee-MiSoon(2007) and Self-Directed learning test developed by Lee-DongJo(1999). We use SPSS 15.0 for windows for data processing analysis between two groups.
The main points, which precis the result of the research, are as follows.
First : Using newspaper in Thematic Integrated Learning was more effective on storybook-using program on improving children's learning interest.
Second : Using newspaper in Thematic Integrated Learning was more effective on storybook-using program on activeness and exploration as low factor of learning interest.
Third : Both of newspaper-using Thematic Integrated Learning and storybook-learning was effective on Self-Directed learning.
Fourth : In newspaper-using Thematic Integrated Learning and storybook-learning program, the spontaneity as a low-factor of Self-Directed learning was similar.
From this results, we can conclude that newspaper in Thematic Integrated Learning have some effect on improving children's interest in learning and Self-Directed learning. But the spontaneity as a low-factor of Self-Directed learning was not very different on both cases. So this paper suggest further works including more large test groups.
