The aim of this study was to measure the effect of gratitude on happiness and depression. Gratitude was divided into two experimental groups; one is the expression of gratitude and the other is a record of gratitude. These experimental groups were compared with the controlled group in the increase in happiness and the decrease in depression. 71 university students participated in this study, and they were instructed to complete a task which was assigned through e-mail after taking a test about their level of happiness and depression. The assigned task was instructed to be carried out for a week, and it aimed at the people who the students felt gratitude for but did not have the opportunity to express it. The task of the expression group was to write a letter of gratitude so that the recipients can have them, and the task of recoding group was to write a letter every single day, but not to send it. The students in both groups were asked to send their task result via e-mail back to the researcher. The controlled group did not have any task to do. A week later after having done their tasks, the students took the same test. The following tests were done monthly. The results of the study are as follows; Significant increase in the feeling of happiness was not found in any of the three groups, but a decrease in the level of depression was found in the two experimental groups. The following tests showed the decrease effect in the experimental groups was consistent. The limitations of this study were the frequency of task completion. Considering the practical performance, the frequency of task was different in the two experimental groups. This could have been the weak stimulation for the expression group, and burden for the recording group. A short task period could have been a limitation for the study as well. Given the limitations, a following study needs to be designed more accurately. The significance of this study is that gratitude was divided in this study to identify the effects. Even though the task did not make an increase in happiness statistically, depression was decreased.
