This study was intended to understand the effects of peer counseling programs in elementary school on the improvement of peer counselor self-concept and communication ability.
Specific study questions were set up to achieve the purpose of the study as follows.
Study question 1: Is it possible to improve peer counselor self-concept by a peer counseling program in elementary school?
Study question 2: Is it possible to improve peer counselor communication ability by a peer counseling program in elementary school?
The subjects of this study were total 16 students who were 3rd grade in I elementary school located in Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do where the researcher were working. They were randomly allocated to two groups, an experiment group and a control group at random. The peer counseling program was applied to the experiment group.
The program lasted 40 minutes per one session and was performed total 11 sessions during 5 weeks. The peer counseling program developed by Lee, Sang-hui·Noh, Seong-deok·Lee, Ji-eun (2001) was used for the study.
Data were collected through communication ability scale and self-concept scale before and after the experiment.
Data were analysed using ANCOVA
The study drew the results as follows.
First, as a result of comparing the scores of post-test for self-concept of a control group with those the experiment group, the scores of self-concept of the experiment group under the peering counseling significantly improved with P<.001.
Second, as a result from comparing the scores of post-test for communication ability in the control group with those the experiment group, that the experiment group under peer counseling has improved scores in communication ability with P<.001.
