The purpose of this dissertation is to verify the effect of creative dance programs on interpersonal communication competence in university students, and additionally, to promote various dance programs and enlarge the realm of social dance education. This dissertation presents the basic experimented data of the applicability of the interpersonal communication competence improving program through dance.
The recipients of this study were students from K university in Seoul who do not major in dance. The research was done by separating them into two different groups of twenty-five students each. One as an experiment group and the other as a controlled group. The experiment group did a creative dance program which was applied once a week for thirteen times, 120 minutes for each time. This was applied in three different stages which was divided by communication patterns. The first stage was four times of intrapersonal communication, so called I-COM, which was about understanding oneself and knowing the availability of ones body. The second stage, which was also done for four times, was interpersonal communication , so called YOU-COM, which was about understanding others, and waking up and expressing the availability of ones body. The third stage included five times of group communication, so called WE-COM, which was a liberal communication, that one can learn the effective communication skills and how to solve problems.
Among many instruments from the past, a translated form of Rubin's ICC(Interpersonal Communication Competence) scale was used as the measuring instrument to measure interpersonal communication competence. This scale is a generalized scale that shows ten kinds of similar abstract-levelled communication competence. The ten items are self-disclosure, empathy, social relaxation, assertiveness, altruism, interaction management, expressiveness, supportiveness, immediacy, and environmental control.
The creative dance program participation group was established as the experiment group to verify the test affect. Two tests, before and after the creative dance program was taken and was analyzed by two-way ANOVA based on 2(group)×2(test) experiment design.
The results of the analysis is as follows. First, among all 10 items of ICC the difference of before and after has lowered to -.13±.142 for the controlled group except for the immediacy, but the result has increased to .30±.144 in all items for the experiment group. Considering the fact that the test taken after the program was during their final exams, which is a term that interpersonal communication rapidly decreases, and that the result has rather increased, the result of the creative dance program participation can be regarded as a sufficient effect toward the students.
Second, in the experiment group, social relaxation among the 10 items of ICC was F=5.240(p<.05) which is a regarding difference. Altruism also came up to be a regarding difference pointing F=7.792(p<.01). Additionally, expressiveness and environmental control also made a difference by F=5.044(p<.05) for expressiveness and F=6.900(p<.01) for environmental control. As shown above, four of the items have statistically regarding change between the group and test.
In conclusion, it is possible to verify that the university students were positively effected in interpersonal communication through participating in the thirteen times of creative dance program. Therefore, to introduce the dance program as a moving educational program for interpersonal communication of university students, diversified research for developing dance programs that fit the university students' mental and physical characteristics is needed. A repeated research should be done to reverify the effect's of diverse factors on interpersonal communication; by changing the intensity, frequency, and term elements of the creative dance program. Furthermore, if objective close examination of the interrelational change in intimacy, confidency, relational satisfaction is possible, this would make up a theoretical contribution on building an academic system in dance psychology and dance sociology. Also, this kind of creative dance program should be encouraged as a cultural studies and the need should be recognized.
