융(C.G.Jung)의 상징이론을 통한 어린이 그림책 일러스트레이션의 표상적(表象的) 특성연구 : - 존 버닝 햄의 작품을 중심으로 = The research of the C.G.Jung's theory of symbols represented in the children's picture story book - taking John Berning Hamm's work as the core

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In life, human basic structure of characteristics are formed mostly during the childhood. There are many primary factors that influence childhood of human being; habits, attitude, education and etc. The common medium that has huge influence upon the formation of characteristic of human nature during one's childhood, is a illustrated story book. The research proved that the use of symbols in illustrated story books plays huge role of influencing childhood. Even though, the education for children today follows this trend of using digital media, computer and every electronic devices as education instrument; nevertheless, the importance of illustrated story books still is emphasized today.
A good illustrated story book gives help in many way for children, such as linguistically, emotionally, intellectually, societary and also in growth of appreciating along with enjoyment. So by these means it is a literature which holds brief sentences or words with artistic picture that formed a piece of art. In it, children meet all different kinds of plants, friends who are different from culture and time who live in different places with different characteristics, the beauty of different colored languages, the mystery colors of fantasy world and sad, but beautiful stories which are met endlessly through out. Like these, children experience a lot of thing within it, grow within the things which they have learned and love it like a friend. In these manner it creates a world for the children none could think of till now.
In an illustrated story book, a theme is an important idea or a thought within the story, and a bond which binds the story. In other words, it is a thought which flows through out the entire story. Hence the writer can express his or her thoughts through the theme. The illustrated story book can have direct connection to the child's own experience, and it can take children to a wonderful fantasy world. And because of these reasons, it takes a big part helping the growth of the children. Therefore the illustrated story book should contain the realism which can give fleshing meaning of life of which the children can act together with it. And organize the problems in life with direct and simple theme, also it must gather up the characters and the events with interest together with a new attitude or insights.
There are many activities in art that interest many targets; however, using the symbolism that has been evolving from the very beginning of human society till today, to know the inside of human's group consciousness, where symbolic system and modeling consciousness are placed, is very important.
The deal of weight occupied by the symbols in Art differ from period and race, west and east, also can be different because of ideals of times. Furthermore, even similar symbols can be analyzed differently depending on the regions and it could also be expressed in various ways, but before it reach the state of expression it follows the same concept of psychologic motivation and the developing process.
Thus the aspect shown together with all cultural area indwell in the human's mind of unconsciousness. This could be seen as the original form of symbols, we could know the common origins and their style of expressing inside the unconsciousness inner world by symbolic system. In this way the manner in the symbolic system is also shown in the illustrated story book. The symbol of children's illustrated story book could be shown unconsciously and consciously. The writer's symbolic expression appears frequently and helps to transmit and understand the content in it. The illustrated story book could also be seen as of the acknowledgement in art, the writer can express the feelings by the way of a line, coloring and shape seen and felt through the piece, which is the model language expressed. This expression reflects the many special qualities of confidential existence not well known to one's inner side. Like in all other Art pieces has meaning implied, reflected with consciousness and unconsciousness. In the same time, it is one of the representation of which cannot have a clear form of definition in the mental perspective.
Many C.G.Jung's theories of symbolism are analyzed in many art works, as well as use of healing process, but the children's illustrated books were never analyzed that far. This research bring the analyzation of symbol of culture, intelligence and emotion together by applying and evaluating with children's illustration books, to find out if the symbols in children's book involves the hidden intention. And hopefully this research would help us to explore the inner mind of children who dreams, who feel hopelessness, who repeats the overcome.
Using this as a background, we could suggest new use of children's illustrated story books by producing them as fit for mentality of children and we might expect some healing effects during the process.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인성(人性)의 기본 형태는 일생을 살아가는 동안 대부분 유년기에 형성된다. 유년기의 인성 형성에 영향을 주는 것은 생활 습관, 태도, 교육 등 여러 가지 요인이 있다. 그림책은 어린이들의 인성 형성에 많은 영향을 끼치는 가장 친숙한 매체이다. 그림책의 상징적인 이미지가 유년기 아동들에게 미치는 영향에 대한 연구 결과들을 통해서도 그 중요성은 입증되었다. 그러므로 현재 아동 교육 현장에서도 전자 매체나 컴퓨터 등이 교수 매체로 많이 활용되고 있는 추세지만 어린이 그림책에 대한 중요성은 여전히 강조되고 있다.
좋은 그림책은 아동에게 책이 주는 즐거움과 함께 언어적, 정서적, 인지적, 사회적, 심미적 발달에 큰 도움을 준다. 이러한 의미에서 그림책은 문학성을 지닌 간결한 글과 미술성을 갖춘 그림이 조화를 이루는 하나의 예술 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 아동들은 그림책 속에서 수많은 동물과 식물, 곳곳에 사는 다양한 성격의 친구들, 가지각색의 언어의 아름다움과 색깔의 신비함, 환상의 세계, 그리고 슬프고 아름다운 이야기들을 무궁무진하게 만난다. 아이들은 이렇게 그림책과 더불어 많은 것을 경험하고, 배우고 느끼며 그것을 바탕으로 성장하고 때로는 친구처럼 사랑하기도 한다. 이처럼 그림책은 어린들이 미처 생각하지 못 했던 아이들이 세계가 그려져 있다.
그림책에 있어 주제란 이야기에 내재되어 있는 중요한 생각이며, 이야기를 묶어 놓는 틀이다. 즉 이야기 전체에 흐르는 생각이다. 따라서 작가는 표현하고자 하는 생각을 주제를 통해 나타낸다. 그림책은 아동 자신의 경험과 직접 관련이 있거나 아동을 아름다운 환상의 세계로 데려다 주기 때문에 아동의 성장 발달에 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 그러므로 그림책에서는 아동들이 함께 호흡하고 그들의 삶에 생생한 의미를 던져줄 수 있는 사실적인 느낌이 함께 표현되어야 한다. 그리고 삶에 대한 문제를 명확하고 단순한 주제로 생동감 있게 구성해야 하며 등장 인물과 사건에 의한 흥미로움과 함께 새로운 자세나 통찰을 불러일으킬 수 있어야 한다.
미술 속에 나타나는 예술 활동의 관심 대상은 수없이 많은데, 원시사회로부터 현대에 이르기까지 문화 예술 전반에 결처 끊임없이 형상화되어온 상징을 통해서 인간의 집단의식 속에 자리 잡고 있는 상징체계와 조형 의식을 아는 것은 중요하다.
상징이 미술에서 차지하는 비중은 시대와 민족, 동양과 서양이 같지 않으며, 그 상징성 또한 시대정신에 따라 다르다. 또한, 동일한 형상일지라도 상징의 내용은 지역에 따라 다르게 해석되고 그 표현도 다양하게 나타난다. 하지만 표현 단계에 이르기까지의 심리적 동기와 과정은 거의 유사한 맥락을 이루고 있다.
이렇게 모든 문화권을 아울러서 비슷한 양상을 보이는 것은 인간 정신의 무의식 속에 공통된 사고가 내재되어 있다는 것을 뜻한다. 이것은 ‘원형적 상징’이라 볼 수 있으며, 우리는 이러한 무의식적 내면세계의 공통적 기원과 그것들의 표현 양식을 상징의 의미 체계를 통해서 살펴볼 수 있다. 이렇듯 상징의 의미 체계에 나타난 양식들은 어린이 그림책에서도 나타난다. 어린이 그림책 일러스트레이션에서의 상징은 작가를 통해 의식적 또는 무의식적으로 드러난다. 작가의 상징적 표현은 책안에 빈번히 등장하며 내용의 전달과 이해에 도움을 준다. 그림책의 일러스트레이션 역시 예술 작품처럼 하나의 심리적 고백으로 볼 수 있으며, 작가는 감정을 담은 작품을 통하여 자신이 바라보고 느끼는 방식을 선, 색채, 형태를 조형 언어로 삼아 표현할 수 있다. 그러한 표현에는 개인의 내면이 잘 알지 못 하는 가장 내밀한 존재의 여러 특성을 반영해 주고 있다. 또한 수많은 예술 작품처럼 의미를 함축하고 있고, 의식과 무의식을 함께 반영하게 된다. 그러면서도 지적인 관점에서 명석하게 정의되지 않는다는 점에서 하나의 상징이다.
융의 상징 이론은 많은 예술 작품을 분석하고, 치료적 입장에 적용하는 데 크나큰 기여를 하였으나 어린이 그림책의 일러스트레이션에 적용하여 분석을 하려는 시도는 없었다. 본 연구는 문화와 지성, 정서를 아우르는 상징의 해석을 그림책 일러스트레이션에 적용 · 분석하여 이미지의 숨겨진 의도와 상징적 내용을 내포하고 있는지 알아볼 수 있었다. 또한 이를 통해 어린이 그림책의 상징적 의미를 이해하면서 꿈을 꾸기도 하고 현실에서 좌절과 극복을 반복하는 어린이의 심오한 세계를 탐구하고 연구하는 데 보탬이 되고자 한다.
이를 바탕으로 어린이 그림책의 새로운 방향을 제시함으로써 어린이의 심리 맞춤형 그림책 제작을 시도할 수 있으며, 그 안에서 치료의 효과를 기대할 수 있을 것이다.
