The purpose of this study was to confirm the specific effects of self-efficacy, hope, and career maturity levels ofmiddle-school 2nd graders of the early adolescence on school adjustment, and to examine how the effects of these factors vary depending on gender.
The hypotheses to verify the study are as follows.
First, what effects do self-efficacy, hope and career maturity have on school adjustment of middle-school students? Second, what difference is there in relative influence of self-efficacy, hope and career maturity on school adjustment of middle school students? Third, what difference is there in effects of self-efficacy, hope and career maturity on school adjustment of middle school students depending on gender?
To prove them, the questionnaire research was conducted targeting 74 boys and 80 girls among 154 male and female students in the 2nd grade of ‘J’ middle school where is located in Gyeonggi-do. And, in order to confirm the research results, SPS statistical program(Window Version 11.5) was utilized.
The major results found in this study are as follows.
First, self-efficacy, hope, career maturity, and school adjustment all had significant correlation. In other words, It was found that for the middle school 2nd graders, the higher self-efficacy, hope, career maturity level led to the better school adjustment.
Second, in the school adjustment of middle school students, only self-efficacy and hope had significant meaning. Namely, school adjustment had significant relevance to self-efficacy, hope, career maturity. However, when these variables were related simultaneously, only self-efficacy and hope was significant on school adjustment. This suggests that the career maturity has indirect influence upon school adjustment, rather than having a direct impact.
Third, the relationship of self-efficacy, hope, and career maturity with school adjustment was different between male and female. And, the relative effect of these variables on school adjustment also had difference depending on gender. The simple correlation between career maturity and school adjustment was insignificant with boys, while girls showed meaningful relevance. Thus, the career maturity level showed the difference by gender in the correlation with school adjustment. Also, in case of male students, self-efficacy indicated school adjustment significantly. However, in case of female students, only hope had crucial effect on school adjustment.
In conclusion, It was discovered that as an important factor explaining school adjustment, an essential role is played by self-efficacy in male students, and by hope in female students. These results imply the necessity of applying different method activities depending on gender in the student-guidance or life-guidance program aiming to boost student's school adjustment.
