The purpose of this study is focused on the phenomenological comprehension of the lives of both female and male alcoholics. The research began in January 2005 and continued until August 2006. It was based on the observation of 12 participants, 7 female and 5 male alcoholics aged from 25 to 58 years old.
The analysis of the data collected from their lives was conducted immediately after the gathering of the pertinent information needed for this study. As a result, the lives of female and male alcoholics have been interpreted in 52 different ways in 9 clusters of themes. The clinical meanings with respect to the two gender groups are illustrated as follows:
Female Groups
1. Feelings of Determinism:
Some of the women participants feel helplessness about becoming alcoholics when they are surrounded by an alcoholic family member.
2. Emotional Hunger:
Most of female alcoholics have had a long history of family abuse in dysfunctional environments. They have been neglected, treated coldly and indifferently by their own parents, feeling that they are worthless, lonely, and deeply wounded from the divorce of their parents or from the death of their loved ones. From such trauma, most women experience emotional hunger and obsession. Some other women who had suffered from sexual abuse or molestation when young were likely to believe that they were worthless as a woman. Such emotional hunger and obsession, as well as self-abandonment, lead the women to become addicted to alcohol.
Some of the women got married in order to desperately escape from alcoholism, consequently however, some ended up getting a divorce due to the physical and sexual abuse from their spouses. Therefore, they tried to solve their life problems by consuming alcohol, and for their feeling of emptiness and hunger they again sought out alcoholic drinks.
3. Susceptibility to be hurt:
Too sensitive to outer environments and confrontations, a woman participant who grew up in a dysfunctional family tried to handle the situations inwardly, but failed to properly control her stress and rage. In order to disguise her problems, she tried to attain a sense of perfectionism. Consequently, she ended up facing too much responsibility and her life became messier and more troublesome. Again, to avoid those problems, an endless vicious circle of turning to alcoholism and/or drugs sinks in.
4. Seeking satisfaction and self-confidence from alcohol:
Some of the women participants admit that they felt excited and relaxed when they drank with their friends or co-workers. They could boldly speak out about things that they dared not say when they were sober. These alcohol-induced behavioral changes are the keys to continuous alcohol dependence, as the women feel more confident about everything if there is alcohol available to them.
5. Life away from reality:
The original motivations for the women alcoholics are found from their loneliness or their desire to escape from their harsh realities. That means that in the case of female alcoholics, alcohol-dependence is a profound expression of their desire to be relaxed and to escape from reality, sometimes even to a rest in peace.
6. Life in isolation:
Mainly because of the social "taboo", women alcoholics try to hide their addiction problems even to their family members. When discovered by their family members, the women make a false promise about alcohol consumption or tell a lie that they will soon quit drinking. However, these promises are never kept by the female alcoholics, and as a consequence, the women feel more and more incompetent and inferior to others, hiding themselves in isolation. As a vicious circle, they again turn to drinking.
7. Life in despair:
Women alcoholics become devastated when they learn hospitalization is not a cure for their alcohol-dependence. Furthermore, their family members suffer greatly from the alcohol-related problems. In some cases, there have been a couple of suicides because of their feelings of desperation and helplessness. Although those women alcoholics have a strong desire to live as a happy woman, they realize that such desire seems out of the question in reality. In turn, they cannot stay away from alcohol intoxication.
8. Alcohol cravings:
Women alcoholics, in the very beginning stage, started drinking only to escape from the monotonous daily life or to be able to mingle with other friends, or to test herself in alcoholic environments. Unfortunately, once alcohol is consumed, drinking becomes habitual and the alcohol consumer gets addicted to it. She (or he) feels restless and nervous if they cannot drink alcohol. When the alcohol consumer momentarily forgets the fact that s/he is an alcoholic, then s/he continues drinking alcohol.
9. Hoping for healing:
There are some cases in which women alcoholics make an effort to stay sober when they realize that they are indeed alcoholics. They have a strong belief that their alcoholism and struggling can be cured with the moral support from their family members. They also pointed out that there needs to be a substitute for alcohol and that they need to receive professional counselling or therapy for other problems unrelated to alcohol. According to this study, it can be concluded that women alcoholics want to escape from alcoholism and to fulfil their roles as a mother and as a woman in their family.
Male Groups
2. Emotional Hunger:
Unlike women alcoholics, male alcoholics are reported to have been traumatized by the death of their parents, divorces because of financial difficulty, and their lack of feeling love and affection. Furthermore, male alcoholics felt emotional hunger from the fact that their worldly knowledge and experience would no longer be needed in society, and that their health is not in good condition for a second career. This emotional hunger causes them to seek out alcohol.
4. Self-satisfaction and confidence:
Male alcoholics report that alcohol consumption can give them self-confidence and courage to speak out about things that they could not say when sober.
8. Cravings for Alcohol:
One male alcoholic reported that in a social situation he could not reveal the fact that he was an alcoholic who should stay away from drinks. However, it is judged that what he reported was caused by nothing but a self-defence mechanism, blaming other people for his overwhelming desire for alcohol or his desire to be fully accepted as a member in social situations.
9. Hoping for healing:
Male alcoholics hope to avoid a drinking situation, and they asserted that they want to maintain their job and emotional security. That means that these male substance abusers are hoping for sober lives of their own when they escape from alcoholism.
In conclusion, women alcoholics and men alcoholics differ from each other in that the emotional hunger of female alcoholics results from parental apathy and indifference when they were young, sexual abuse and molestation, as well as domestic violence and divorce when they were married before. Therefore, they lost hope for happiness and even tried to commit suicide. Unlike the case of women alcoholics, emotional hunger in male alcoholics comes from the loss of self-identity caused by their joblessness.
It is interesting to note that both men and women experience satisfaction and self-confidence from alcohol consumption, which in turn triggers them to become alcoholics. When the degree of alcohol-dependence gets worse, their lives become more and more alienated and isolated from their family and community. Although male alcoholics and female alcoholics desire different cures and healing processes, they both are anxious to have the "normal" lives of non-alcoholics.
Therefore, to some extent this study reveals the exact nature of the lives of both male and female alcoholics on the basis of the observations of their diverse experiences, their hopes, and their ambitions. Hopefully, this paper will be a stepping-stone for the development of a strategy and practical cure for the ones who are suffering from alcoholism.
