One kind of the mass media, Television is engaged to and strongly affects our daily life. The viewers hugely support Dramas amongst TV shows.
In the past, there were also dramas subjected to the women, but they mostly depended on the men and their lives were decided by males. Currently, the number of working women has increased so the stereotyped idea about them has started to change.
These changed feminity have had effect on the masculinity as much as to change men's characteristics. TV dramas extremely shows the change. The <Coffee Prince No.1> which showed those changed roles by genders and views of love and marriage attracted public attention with bold words and expressions about sex and love.
Hereby, the purposes of this paper are to make study of conflict structure between lovers, family members, and classes on the <Coffee Prince No.1> and to explain their mythic meanings and social protests. The questions are below:
Question 1. How were the conflicts amongst the characters expressed in the <Coffee Prince No.1>? And what is the ideologic meaning?
Question 2. What are the mythic meaning and difference to the existing mythologies in the <Coffee Prince No.1>?
Question 3. What is the implications on our society?
Herein, selected semiologic approach and analyzed how the social meanings were involved by separating into the syntagm, paradigm, and myths.
As the result of analysis of the <Coffee Prince No.1>, through analysing syntagm, it suggested a positive and independent image of woman in the relationship between man and women. Then, in the conflict relationship between them, it showed competition in the earlier time and changed into friendship; in the conflict amongst family members, it presented notably different attitudes between the older generations and the younger about sex and marriage; in the conflict amongst classes, the mid-low classes and the high class had contrast views of marriage in the drama.
According to the paradigm, it was clear that the stereotype of the gender role totally changed in Korean society. In short, the stereotype of the gender role between men and women changed, so some of their roles were reversed each other. Furthermore, the drama proposed that the homosexuality is also a type of loves and hardly ever had image of the patriarchal society comparing to the former dramas.
The semantic structure of the <Coffee Prince No.1> shown through the differences to the myths are suggestion of the independent woman image, possibility of various loves, and that marriage between a man and a woman is that an equal man and woman meet and make the equal and impartial relationship instead a woman depend on a man.
Social and implying meaning of the <Coffee Prince No.1> based on those results is that it suggested the new gender role models of women and men, the homosexuality as a new kind of love not regarding it with negative view and prejudice, and marriage as a unite between an equal man and woman instead of subordination of a woman to a man.
To interpret mass media, we should have tolerable and acceptable open views of various forms of ideologies and ideas not bound by stereotypes or prejudice. Thus, we need to have a new view point of the existing cognitions through the social changes and their implications in the <Coffee Prince No.1>. Furthermore, we are required to get an attitude to strive for change ourselves to cope with life positively.
