The study is to investigate the effect of having family tea time on family health from the housewife's perspective especially when individual tea habit becomes family habit of tea drinking, considering the reality of these days where tea drinking is popular with women being the leaders.
To this end, questionnaires were distributed among tea group and no tea group and the data collected were processed through the 12.0 SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science), and for the investigation of demographic characteristics, family tea life and health of tea drinking family, the values of frequency, percentage, average and standard deviation were calculated and the differences between the two groups were examined with through Chi-Square Test, T-test or ANOVA, and if there was statistically significant difference, Duncan test was carried out then, and it led to the following findings:
First, the health of individual member of family showed significant difference according to the age, children’s age, levels of education and the occupations of the respondents among other demographic characteristics, regardless of having tea time or not.
Family binding appeared stronger in the families of lesser than their 50’s, while family communication appeared stronger for the families with university degree or more, and families with professional job appeared healthier than those none professional families.
When it comes to sharing value system, families with children below university age appeared more effective than those with children above university age. If the families have children above university age, the families with professional jobs appeared more effective. As for family problem solving, families who graduated university and families with professional careers seemed to be better at solving them.
Second, family tea time was proven to be effective on the improvement of family health in general. And difference between the two groups, tea group and no tea group, appeared to be comparatively considerable in the areas of family bondage, family communication and family problem solving. The families of having tea time seemed to have more positive communication more often, and they seemed to see family relationship more important and feel closer among themselves, and it was proved to help improve their members’ consulting ability. As a result it can be said that tea time families tend to have healthier family life than no tea time families. And positive tea habit of individual member of the family was known to contribute to the whole family health.
Third, one of the most significant changes for tea time family was for their children. Housewives at their 30’s of the tea time families were more considerate and behaved more carefully towards their children. And for the housewives at their 50’s or more, their children tended to have tea more often and be interested in Korean traditional culture. The more they are educated, the longer their tea time became and most of them were found to get tea education. Regarding the age of their children, Elementary students seemed to like tea more than Secondary students and adults did so that children who get more influenced and cared by their mothers were found to be more interested in tea drinking.
According to the findings of the investigation, family health is a must for modern days’ families effectively to overcome various stresses in the face of unpredictable social, cultural, economical changes. Therefore, the tea life of housewives who are the center of tea and family life can considerably contribute to their family health and the development of their tea habit into their family habit would certainly be the foundation for their family health.
