This study aims to examine what factors affect Internet addiction on high school and university students. In order to find the mutual relation factors, the problem of this study were specified as follows;
I. How was actual condition of Internet use?
II. Are there differences in Internet addiction depending on the gender of teenagers and college students?
III. Are there differences in degree of Internet addiction according to ages?
IV. What difference in factors of Internet addiction according to degree?
V. What relationship exists between Internet addiction and factors?
VI. What factor most likely to predict Internet addiction?
The subjects consist of 1150 students of 10 high schools and 4 universities. Students' answer which responds insincerely and do not respond on certain question was eliminated on research. Thus, total 1072 students' answer(high school: 514 college : 558) were left. The average age of high school students(male:282 female:232) were male 17.40(SD=.684) years old and felmale 17.48(SD=.720) years old. College students'(male:226 female:332) average were male 22.68(SD=2.384) years old and female 21.01(SD=1.488) years old.
The method used in this study include
1)Internet addiction standard - which was used to measure Internet addiction of highschool and college students. For measure high school students' Internet addiction, K-standard which was developed by Ministry of Information and Communication, Korean information culture center and Seoul National University's research team(2002) and for the college students' A-standard which was developed by Oh won-lee and so on in 2005 was used.
2)Self-Esteem Standard -was used to measure self esteem and this standard was developed by Rosenberg in 1979.
3)Self-efficacy Standard was used to check Self-efficacy which was made in 1997 by Kim Ah Young.
4)Social Support Standard was used to measure percept social support developed by You Seoung Eun in 1997.
5) Social avoid and Anxiety standard was used which was made by Choi Jeong-hoon and Lee Kyung-yun in 1994.
6) Stress Management Standard to check how students manage their stress which was developed by Park Ae-sun and Lee Young-hee in 1992.
7) Beck depression Standard - to check depression, developed by Lee Young-ho in 1993
8) Beck suicide Standard - to measure students impulse on suicide which was developed by Shin Min-sup in 1993
9) Trait-anaxiety standard - to check anxiety, developed by Han Deuk-yoong, Lee Jang-ho and Jun Kyum-kyu in 1996
10) Parents - Offspring communication stard - to measure interaction between parents and their offspring, developed by Choi Tae-san and Hpng Kyung-ja in 1997.
Data was collected between September 10 and September 30, 2007 from high school and college students. Questionnaire was distributed and collected by teacher and professor in charge in class.
These are conclusion of this study.
First of all, Result show that there are no Internet addicted students because study's objects are limited to high school and college students who manage normal life. However, divide these students into 3 categories according to their times of Internet use show limitation on this research. Thus, afterward study should figure out the difference between the Internet addicted and normal people.
Second, there could be a difference in Internet use between human knowledge high school students and business high school students. Also, college students could have difference in Internet use depending on their major. Thus, afterward study requires to subdivide group more specific.
Third, This study use confirmed Internet addiction factors at earlier studies. Therefore, there are need to verify relationships between factors like Parents' attitude in rearing, attachment to their offspring and characteristic.
Fourth, This study limited to Internet addiction. However, there are need to research on sub-categories of Internet addiction like game addiction, Pornographic addiction.
Fifth, unlike other studies which did not classify group according to the age or limited object merely highschool or college students, this study verify various factors which have impact on Internet addiction to both male, female high school and college students.
These are suggestions for afterward study.
First, this study's participants are limited to specific region, it would be hard to generalize results to all high school and college students. Afterward study should be survey various groups.
Second, this study classify the Internet addicted based on self diagnosis, it couldn't figure out that they are real internet addicted or merely show symptoms. Thus, afterward study should used method not only self diagnosis but also various conduct standard.
Third, this study is need to short-term longitudinal study of searching to internet addiction and internet pathological diagnosis.
This study suggests that relations of depression, social avoidance, anxiety, stress copying, self-efficacy and social support of Internet addiction on high school and university students.
