This study examined how elders perceive the death in the remaining period of lives and whether they demand death preparation training. For this purpose, this study surveyed 184 60-year-old or older elders in West Chungnam (Seoan and Taean). The following summarizes the results of this study:
First, the analysis of attitude toward death indicated that gender, age, health condition, and living condition did not affect elders' attitude toward death. Considering sub-categories, educational background, living condition, and co-residence had a significant impact on fear of death. In other words, uneducated or undereducated elders were more fearful of death than others with high school education. Also, groups with financial hardships were less fearful than groups with financial stability. In addition, elders living with spouse were less fearful than elders living with offspring. Educational background and religion were significantly influential on evasion from death. Elders with college diploma were less evasive than other elders. Catholic believers were less evasive than Christian or Buddhist believers and non-religious believers. Educational background, religion, and living conditions also contributed to openness to death. In other words, elders with high school or college diploma were more open to death than others with lower educational level and Catholic believers were more open than Christian believers. Those with financial difficulties were most open, while others with moderate financial stability were least open.
Second, most responders recognized the necessity of death training, but most responders have not had any experiences in death training. Many of them showed intention to participate in death preparation training and preferred professional educational institutions. They demanded various contents of training, including ‘how to decrease fear of death,’ ‘knowledge on preparing wills or inheritance,’ and ‘meaning of death and value of life.’
Third, the correlation between attitude toward death and death preparation training proved that those who are more fearful and open felt stronger about death preparation training and had greater intention to participate in death preparation training. Most elders had at least one thing, such as portrait or shroud, prepared for their death.
Based on the above findings, I made the following suggestions:
First, the society must have awareness of death training education.
Second, the government and social welfare organizations must intervene in and promote death training education.
Third, death training education must be understood as a part of social welfare.
Fourth, collaboration and research in various fields are important to develop professional death preparation programs.
Fifth, death preparation programs must thoroughly reflect elders' characteristics and desires.
Sixth, death preparation training must be offered for any age as a part of lifelong education.
Seventh, it is necessary to foster professional instructors in death preparation training.
