The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends in childhood creativity education by year, by content, and by research method, to provide foundational data on the trends, and to suggest helpful directions toward further research in this field.
The subjects of this study were 104 articles presented on journals specialized in childhood education from their initial edition to the one issued in 2006, such as The Journal of Association for Future Early Childhood Education, The Journal of Korea Open Association for Early Childhood Education, The Journal of The Korean Society for Early Childhood Education, The Journal of Association of Child Studies, The Journal of The Korea Association of Childcare and Education. The standard for research content classification was made by this writer referring to standards used in previous studies. The standard for research method classification was revised and complemented standards of Ok-Seung Yang (1997), Kyung-Won Jeon (1999), Mi-Sook Choi(1994), Crowl(1993), MacMilliam and Schumacher(1989)'s Research in Education.
The frequency and percentage of the data collected in this study were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 for Windows program.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, analyzed by year, 3 articles on methods of childhood creativity education were presented in 1980s among 104 articles in total up to 2006, but since the lack of programs with diversity there had been no research through 1990 and 1994. The number of articles had increased since 1995 and the difference had gotten bigger, i.e. 1 in 1995, 1 in 1996, 4 in 1997, 6 in 1998, 5 in 1999, 4 in 2000, 11 in 2001, 10 in 2002, 10 in 2002, 10 in 2003, 12 in 2004, 19 in 2005 and 18 in 2006.
Second, analyzed by research content, the most frequent research subject was creativity education methods, and the details were creativity training programs, effects, examinations, program development and estimation, creativity improvements,
In the realm of teachers (pre-service teachers as well) who facilitates creativity development, the research subjects were centered on teachers' beliefs, attitudes, talents, characteristics, teacher-child interaction. In the area of childhood creativity development, the subjects were mainly regarding creative features and products. In the area of factors that influence creativity, most researches were conducted on parents as a variable. In the field of creativity measurements and estimation, studies on the instruments to measure children's, teachers' and parents' creativity followed by the nature, concept, and theories of creativity. Most commonly raised issues on journals were creativity education methods, creativity development and teachers (pre-service teachers included) in order of frequency, and the nature, concept, theories were least popular.
Third, analyzed by research methods in three aspects, research targets were placed much upon people, and the most frequent age on which research was conducted was 5. Age 1 and 2 were not often considered. About the type of research, most researches were quantitative and experimental and about data collecting method, quantitative research was common as well. For test tools used to measure creativity, TTCT test by Torrence, K-CCTYC by Kyung-won Jeon, and teacher role estimation scale by Mi-ok Moon were the most popular ones.
