The notion of pung-su-chi-ri is the principle that explains the relationship between the earth and the people who live there. The core of the relationship embraces good or bad luck as well as fortune and misfortune. In terms of theoretical background, chuyuck and um-yang and five elements are the cornerstones of pung-su-chi-ri thought in the sense that all of them come from the thought of life in which both nature and human beings are considered as organisms.
The view of um-yang and five elements is a criterion that regulates and judges the shape of all things in the universe plus the phenomena caused by their interaction. It is possible for all things to be generated and change by compromising between urn and yang, which is called vitality. Given that the workings of vitality continue constantly, all phenomena in the universe are to be developed without cease.
The view of vitality is a theory which claims that chin-hyul exists in the territory which is full of vitality. This is the right place where we can protect ourselves against the wind and get water. Thus, the purpose of pung-su is to discover the place where chin-hyul exists, and it is called myungtang ("a very good place"). In yang-ki-pung-su, myungtang is the place where we can build our houses.
The view of pung-su-chi-ri can be divided into two main opinions: yang-ki-pung-su and um-tack-pung-su. While the basic idea of the former is that people who build their houses or decide capital in good places enjoy a blessing, the one of the latter is to get umtuck ("a stealthy benefaction") by deciding their ancestors graves in good places. As for yang-ki, the most suitable land is so-called kilchi which compromises urn and yang and is full of vigor by means of five elements. In other words, an ideal residential zone should be the place in which we can easily get the supplies essential to our lives by virtue of beneficial geographical features that include the mountain and the river.
However, it is necessary for us to make pung-su-chi-ri theory objective and reanalyze it with a perspective on the future for the purpose that pung-su-chi-ri theory, which is associated with ancient agrarian society where natural surroundings played a crucial role, works positively even in modem society which is characterized as magnification and concentration by way of concrete.
With this background, the correlation between pung-su-chi-ri thought and architecture culture can be summarized as follows.
First, since pung-su-chi-ri thought considers nature, man, and architecture as an integrated organism, it suggests that it is necessary that man as a part of nature should live in harmony with natural surroundings. This way of thinking has played an important role in maintaining the unique style of architecture throughout Korean building culture.
Second, the balance and harmony among sasinsa(四神砂) is thought highly of in determining ideal residential sites. In addition, the balance and harmony with nature is prerequisite for the geographical conditions that not only are friendly to the environment, but also give us a lot of benefits of nature. By preparing colonies in such places that meet the geographical conditions, we can provide inhabitants with the convenience of their lives as well as the mental and psychological stability.
Third, a compass direction plays a significant role in architecture in the sense that it is close related to inhabitants good and bad luck. In order to decide the direction, we should first consider the condition of nature, such as water, the wind and the sun. Furthermore, the compass direction can be used as a criterion by which we can decide proper building and determine the space arrangement.
Fourth, given that pung-su-chi-ri theory regards nature as an organism, it enables us to develop the architectural styles of Korea in which residential circumstances friendly to nature instead of the reckless development of nature are highly concentrated on. What is more, this theory makes it possible to offer a desirable architecture culture as well as environment culture in which our attitude should be future-oriented.
Fifth, pung-su-chi-ri theory can provide the theory of city plan which takes into account of environment in planning for the modern city, since pung-su-chi-ri theory gives the notion of the unity between nature and human beings. Moreover, under the notion of pung-su-chi-ri theory, we can find a more reasonable and appropriate theoretical basis for the conditions of location, direction, and the arrangement of buildings, in particular, of the apartment house buildings which have become a new concept of residence in modern times.
Sixth, pung-su-chi-ri theory can even offer a proper theoretical background on the city and the architecture for ecology that will be the new concepts of the city and the architecture in the near future.
