Ever-increasing web broadcasters, with higher quantity and quality of relevant web contents than before, come into inevitable competitions with existing media. As Internet evolves in an emerging direction called web broadcast that can deliver even movie clips in real time, the web broadcast comes to perform advanced functions equivalent to TV, and there are more attentions to how much the former may replace the latter in functional aspects.
The purpose of this study was to profile the actual user behaviors of teenagers - as major demand group for Internet - in web broadcast; compare and analyze actual user satisfaction at web broadcast and TV, one of legacy media to determine which of these two media contributes to better satisfaction of teenagers from the angle of consumer; and find out whether the web broadcast is a real alternative of TV to meet needs of media consumers.
As a result, this study came to the following findings:
According to t-test on 4 major dimensions, i.e. amusement & recess, sex appeal, informational satisfaction and interactability for a comparative analysis on user satisfaction with web broadcast and TV, it was found that there were significant differences between these two media types in ‘amusement & recess’ and ‘informational satisfaction.’ In detail, in regard to satisfaction at needs for ‘amusement & recess', it was found that our respondents felt higher satisfaction at TV than web broadcast. On the other hand, in regard to ‘informational satisfaction', it was found that our respondents showed higher satisfaction at web broadcast than TV.
These findings may imply certain possibility of web broadcast to play a role as functional alternative of TV, a legacy media to even functionally meet the needs for ‘informational satisfaction’ in TV. But t-test results hereof demonstrated only possibility of web broadcast as functional alternative of TV. Therefore, in order to further demonstrate possibility of web broadcast as functional alternative of TV, this study conducted a cross tabulation analysis to determine how much there might be differences in using TV depending on actual use of web broadcast.
These findings mean that TV is associated with web broadcast to a certain extent depending on actual use, and also support certain possibility of web broadcast as functional alternative of TV.
Summing up, according to comparing the results of this study to those of some previous studies on actual profile of web broadcast users, it is found that web broadcast users have been remarkably increasing in last several years. This implies that web broadcast now becomes a systematic and popularized media gradually, and the more market demands for web broadcast lead to the more needs for it. It has another implication that web broadcast will evolve in more progressive ways through competitions with legacy media in remote future and will also likely to replace or substitute for legacy media like TV.
