This correlation study has been examined the pain, depression and life satisfaction of the chronic low back pain patients that can be overlooked , and it researched the relation between them. It is for the improvement of their life satisfaction by developing nursing interventions.
The subjects are 98 adults that go to hospital regularly or are hospitalized for back pain targeted a general hospital in Seoul and two general hospital in Seoul or Kyungido. The research period was from June 1st to August 30th in 2007.
The study means is visual analogue scale(VAS) for pain and Beck's depression inventory(BDI) for depression and Ok Kyung Yang's (1994) measurement for satisfaction that consists of subjective satisfaction for whole life and other sub-factors.
The data has been analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 and the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation coefficient , t-test and ANOVA have also been used for analysis.
The results are as follows.
1. In case of pain, it has showed 5.85 (± 2.22) on an average among 0 to 10 and spine disc patients is the most(44.2%).
2. The depression degree of chronic back pain patients is average 1.83 (± .83) per 4 points.
3. The life satisfaction of the subjects is average 2.89 (± .93) per 5 point.
4. The general characteristics due to the pain gave showed a meaningful difference depending on life satisfaction (F=4.280 , p=.007), physical condition (F=10.541,p=.000), sleeping hours (F=2.734, p=.048). The depression is different depending on gender (t=-2.180, p=.032) and women is higher than men. It is meaningfully different depending on education background(F=2.654, p=.038), life satisfaction (F=11.670,p=.000), physical condition (F=7.486, p=.000 ) and sleeping hours(F=4.266, p=.007) are meaningfully. The life satisfaction of general characteristics is meaningfully different depending on age(F=4.921, p=.001), educational backgraound(F=4.786, p=.002), monthly income(F=8.013, p=.000), life satisfaction (F=26.102, p=.000), physical satisfaction(F=6.689, p=.000) and sleeping and sleeping hours(F=5.370, p=.002).
5. The pain according to the characteristics of back pain is meaningfully different in the aspect of the back pain frequency (F=5.403, p=.002),disease(F=4.080, p= .020) and operation (t=3.503, p= .001). The depression of the characteristics of back pain is meaningfully different depending on the back pain frequency (F=4.056, p=.009). The life satisfaction of general characteristics is meaningfully different the back pain frequency (F=5.842, p=.001), duration time(F=2.657,p=.038), operation(t=-2.413,p=.018).
6. In the view of pain, depression and life satisfaction, the correlation between pain and depression is r=0.352, and the correlation between the depression and life satisfaction is r=-.453 and the correlation between the depression and life satisfaction is r=-.677. As the pain becomes higher, the depression becomes higher. The more pain becomes, the lower the depression becomes.
To sum up the results, chronic back pain can be taken to all ages and it is very similar to the slight depression . This suggests that the depression has a strong effect on the life. The pain and depression have a correlation. In addition, the nursing interventions to release the pain and depression is needed in various ways.
