This study aimed at suggesting the teaching-learning method of expository text writing for Korean learners of academic purpose. Whether students can successfully accomplish their study or not is able to be decided through certain evaluations. As the method of these evaluations, there are many kinds of forms like midterm examination, final examination, report and thesis etc. Surely the oral evaluation method like group discussion or seminar can be used as a sort of evaluation but actually Writing outcome which is expressed in literary text rather than colloquial text is regarded as more objective evaluating standard.
The evaluation standard as above is also samely adapted to the Korean learners studying at universities in Korea. In spite of this, since many Korean learners had been familiar with communication centered teaching-learning method, most of them appeal that writing in Korean is relatively difficult than listening and speaking in Korean. Actually we can ascertain the writing skill is not only the most needed but also difficult at the same time through the needs' research result for Korean learners of academic purpose.
The necessity of improving the writing skill for academic purpose's Korean learners is certain as above. But at the same time we cannot help considering the difficult situation that the division of all Korean learners in accordance with their own purpose of studying Korean is not easy. So if we pay attention to this status, the best way to be helpful for the classwork is developing effective teaching-learning method even with already equipped curriculum and teaching materials.
Therefore, in this study I attempted to figure out how much the Korean learners of academic purpose are exposed to appropriate text pattern and structures for the accomplishment of their own study at the university through the examination and analysis of several selected materials among the published materials of representative Korean language institute of university. Especially, through the theoretical consideration, I clarified the expository text is the most comprehensively used text pattern among various text patterns on accomplishing study and focused on figuring out the actual status of the appearance rate and the diversity of the expository text on each selected textbook. Also I tried to find out whether those textbooks are appropriately constituted to make learners aggressively practice writing strategy per each writing aspect.
On the basis of the textbook analysis result as above, I stressed on the importance of making a good use of writing strategy per each writing step until learners produce final writing outcome which are adequate to the academic purpose. Through the recognition of this importance, I suggested the actual teaching-learning method about writing two patterns of (comparison-contrast, problem solving) expository texts which are selected through the result of textbooks analysis. At this part, I specially focused on presentation of effective ways which make learners use the knowledge of expository text structure and writing strategy. Furthermore, ultimately aimed at making Korean learners of academic purpose produce creative and logical expository text for successive accomplishment of study at university.
