The purpose of this study is to review and analyze the industrial mechanism and determining factors of the successful box-office sales of Korean films with a view to how the success of the films has been affected by different types of production and promotion throughout its dramatic transformation in 2000's.
The study provides a systematic overview and data about the success mechanism and profit structure of major trends in Korean films by discussing and analyzing a range of topics from the types and characteristics of domestic entertainment films in early 2000’s to the developmental trends of major success factors that can be identified from representative box-office hits.
Estimation statistic analysis model was used as the basic methodological approach in this study. Particularly, the "An Analytical Study Model for the Success Expectation of Cinema Movies" proposed by Barry Litman (1983) and correlation analysis model of success factors and interpretation variables by Justin Wyatt in his "High Concept"(1994) were used as the basis on which this study set forth its research directions and analytical ground with reference to the literature relating to the success factors of the film industry and statistical data from movie yearbooks. In addition, newspaper articles and internet data about box-office hits were also used.
This paper is composed of four chapters as follows: Chapter 1, Introduction, describes research goals and methods used. Chapter 2 analyzes changing trends based on the analysis of historical data about 50 top-10 box-office hits and the movies that had sold over one million tickets for the first five years of the 2000's, and identifies major trends of success in recent Korean films.
The codes of success of the films were built from annual best hit films, directors, actors and trends of genre by year and analysis of subjects of the successful films as a variable is described in a separate section in detail to provide annual overview of production trends and success by subjects. Chapter 3 summarizes the results of the analysis on overall sample index representing success factors, and, based on these results of sample index analysis, identifies the success criteria of Korean films and suggests a success cycle of hit films appearing during the analysis period. This chapter also looks into the sub-market of domestic movie industry to diagnose its current slackness and to identify industrial problems in the annexed copyright market and proposes a way to build a stable, secondary structure of reproduction for movie industry as an alternative system that can be utilized as a stable recoup system for the film promotion system. Chapter 4, the conclusion, provides general summing-up of this study and its justification as well as limitation.
In short, this study raises the awareness of the major success trends of the film industry and provides strategic know-how about box-office profit generation in the perspective of risk management by analyzing the context and trends of the most recent productions that are monumental in the history of movie production in the country.
This paper, produced when there have been no previous systematic studies on the success variables of Korean movies in 21C, should be meaningful in that it will provide a bird's eye view of the success codes in view of movie marketing as well as a reference in view of the recent history of promotional movies.
