The purpose of this research is to study the general trends of adolescents' behavior problems, and to analyze the correlations between the problems and the factors such as individual psychology, family environment and social environment.
In order to achieve these goals, we constructed the criteria that describe self-esteem, self-control, parenting behavior, marital conflicts between their parents, contact to juvenile delinquents and school adjustment. Then, we collected self reported questionnaires from five hundred students who are second grade of middle school in Incheon, South Korea, and analyzed 483 (281 male students, 202 female students) of them.
We can recapitulate our results as follows. First, most of adolescents have experienced low levels of both externalizing and internalizing behavior problems. For externalizing behavior problems, the results do not show significant differences between male and female adolescents. On the other hand, we found that female adolescents experiences internalizing behavior problems more than male adolescents.
Second, in the point of view of individual psychology factors, low level of self-esteem influences negatively to both externalizing and internalizing behavior problems for male adolescents. In addition, low level of self-control causes for both male and female adolescents to experience externalizing and internalizing behavior problems more.
Third, abnormal parenting behaviors and marital conflicts aggravate externalizing and internalizing behavior problems.
Fourth, more exposure to juvenile delinquents or school maladjustment causes more adolescents' behavior problems. Internalizing behavior problems of male adolescents are not affected by contact with delinquents.
Consequently, the most influential factors that cause externalizing behavior problems are self-control and contact with delinquents. Also, externalizing behavior problems of female adolescents were influenced by mostly marital conflict. The significant factors that cause internalizing behavior problems of male adolescents are self-control, self-esteem, marital conflict and contact with delinquents, while internalizing behavior problems of female adolescents are affected by self-esteem, contact with delinquents and abnormal parenting behaviors.
