This study is designed to examine a psycho-social program for schizophrenics, including Korean traditional plays that have aspects of reminiscence, play, and therapy. The study adopted a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-postest. Subjects were schizophrenics who were at a psychiatric institute in Jeollanamdo H-Gun. They were divided into the control group (20) and experimental group (23).
The psycho-social program was conducted 14 times twice a week from July 9 to August 25, 2007. We monitored emotion, relationship, and self-esteem using emotional expressivity scale (EES) (Kring, Smith, and Neale, 1994), positive and negative affect schedule (PANAS) (Watson et al., 1988), relationship change scale (RCS) (Schlein, Guerney and Stover, 1971), and self-esteem scale (SES) (Rosenberg, 1965), respectively. The data were expressed in frequency and percentile and the normality of the data was checked by the Kolmogorova-Smirnov test (SPSS software). Before the onset of the psycho-social program, the experimental and control groups were statistically compared using Chi-square test and independent t-test. The effect of our program was examined by repeated measures ANOVA. Chronbach index was used for reliability of measuring scale.
The major findings of this study are as:
1) Before the examination, there was no significant difference between the two groups in general characteristics and the dependent variables.
2) The experimental group who participated in the program showed a statistically significant increase in EES score (F=20.520, 0=.000).
3) The experimental group showed a higher positive affect schedule score than the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant (F=3.704, p=.061)
4) The experimental group showed a lower negative affect schedule score than the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant (F=2.441, p=.126)
5) The experimental group showed a significantly higher RCS score (F= 10.486, p=.002)
6) The experimental group showed a significantly higher SES score (F= 4.706, p=.036)
On the basic of these findings it was concluded that the psycho-social program based on Korean traditional play has an effect in emotional expression, relationship, and self-esteem. Besides, it has been verified that the program is an effective nursing intervention that can positively influence emotional expression, relationship, and self-esteem of schizophrenic patients.
