This study aims on comparing and analyzing recognition of parents, principals and teachers. The comparative items of this study include the need for early childhood english education and its cause, current situation of early childhood english education, level of satisfaction of early childhood english education and its cause, and conditional acknowledgement for early childhood english education.
The subjects of this study are 74 principals who are running educational facilities for young children(kindergarten, preschool) located in Seoul and Gyunggido, 339 parents and 107 teachers from each facility. The study was perfomed by a questionnaire made by this researcher, and data were analyzed with Frequency, Percentage and - test.
The results of this study are as following;
First, all of the principals, parents, and teachers acknowledge that early childhood english education is necessary, because they are aware English is one of the necessities in the future. In case they do not acknowledge early childhood english education is not necessary, the reason is that they consider learning English after elementary school sufficient.
Principals, parents, and teachers all generally recognize early childhood english education at kindergartens(preschools), but teachers were comparably negative to other groups.
Second, parents and principals answered that all of the kindergartens(preschools) are executing early childhood english education, and the recognition of principals played a critical role to execution. The reason parents did not practice early childhood english education was due to lack of information and related facilities, and principals did not do so due to their own recognition as well. Currently parents who are not practicing early childhood english education are planning to do practice in the future, but on the other hand, principals were negative to doing so. Parents answered that kindergartens(preschools) are practicing early childhood english education, and most of the principals answered that they assume full responsibility to English instructors from outside with the education.
Third, while parents and principals showed positive recognition for the level of satisfaction for early childhood english education practiced at kindergartens(preschools), teachers showed the opposite. For the cause of satisfaction for early childhood english education practiced at kindergartens(preschools), the 3 groups all shared the common cognition that it motivates and interests the students about English. Also, for the cause of dissatisfaction, cognition of insufficient improvement of English skills was the highest among the 3 groups, followed by insufficient certainty for the ability of English instructors.
On the level of satisfaction for early childhood english education at places other than kindergartens(preschools), the parents were positive but the teachers were negative. For the cause of satisfying with early childhood english education at places other than kindergartens (preschools), parents and teachers all recognizes that it motivates and interests the students about English. For the cause of being unsatisfied with early childhood english education at places other than kindergartens(preschools), parents and teachers were mainly aware of lacking certainty for the ability of English instructors.
Forth, in terms of the period to start early childhood english education, parents and teachers acknowledged 5-year old the best, while principals acknowledged 3-year old the best. Also, all 3 groups recognized kindergartens(preschools) as the most appropriate education facility and location for early childhood english education. In terms of the goal for early childhood english education, parents, principals, and teachers all acknowledged interest and motivation for English the most. Concerning the content and method of education, all 3 groups thought that entertainment-oriented operation in kindergarten curriculum was most preferable. As for preferable English instructor for young children, foreign English instructor received highest regards followed by Korean English instructor, and homeroom teachers of each kindergarten class. The principals considered the homeroom teachers most preferable as English instructors for young children, while parents preferred foreign English instructors more. Moreover, knowledge for children development and guidance was the most important category for the disposition English instructors must have for early childhood english education.
Fifth, concerning problems for early childhood english education, all of the parents, principals, and teachers were aware that chances to actually use English in life was extremely low, followed by insufficient knowledge for the characteristics of children development and systematic researches. Parents were comparably more aware of recognizing lack of chances to actually use English in life as a problem than other groups, and teachers recognized overheated attention from parents as the prime problem. As for solutions to solve problems of early childhood english education, systematic nurturing of English instructors received most response, followed by preparing chances to actually use English and making systematic researches for English education. Instructors were more aware of making systematic researches for English education while parents of preparing chances to actually use English in life compared to other groups.
