As modern society rapidly change, the family type in our country also has changed to into the nuclear family from the traditional extended family. Then, the importance of marital relationship in family relationship increased. Accordingly, there is necessity of paying attention to marital relationship as the determinant in the quality of family. In particular, in case of the newly-wedded couple's family, the marital relationship and quality may be the important determinant in stability of family. However, the newly-wedded couple could suffer from difficulty in marital adjustment due to problems such as mutually different personality and life customs. And, this could be confirmed through high divorce rate in the newly-wedded couples.
In other words, the smooth adjustment in the newly-wedded couples becomes an important factor that allows healthy family to be possibly formed in the long run. Accordingly, in order to help the smooth newly-wedded marital adjustment, there is necessity of the diverse inquires into the relevant variables, which influence the newly-wedded marital adjustment. However, the inquire into the relevant variables for newly-wedded marital adjustment is biased to factors after marriage such as communication, conflict, and gender role, thereby being the real situation of being insufficient in a research on factors before marriage such as family-of-origin factor. Consequently, this study focused on the parent-child relationship, which has effect on the newly-wedded marital adjustment. Based on the relationship with attachment to parents, psychological separation, and newly-wedded marital adjustment, the research was conducted focusing on influences among these things. And, the influence of family-of-origin factors upon the newly-wedded marital adjustment was verified. Through this, this study aimed to be conducive to the smooth mutual adjustment and understanding in development task newly-wedded couples and to offer basic materials for reinforcing the marital relationship of the premarital couples and the newly-wedded couples. Furthermore, in the long-term aspect, it aimed to contribute to allowing the stable family life to be led by emphasizing importance of performing the family's development task.
The subjects of this study were 216 men and women in the newly-wedded couples with less than 5 years since marriage. The collected data was calculated frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation And, t-test and one-way ANOVA by using SPSS WIN 12.0 program. As the post-test between groups, Scheffe test was carried out. The following are as.
First, as a result of examining whether there is difference in marital adjustment according to demo-sociological characters in the survey subjects, the significant difference was indicated in marital adjustment depending on religion among demo-sociological factors, above all. As a result of examining the difference in each of sub-factors of marital adjustment according to demo-sociological factors, there was significant difference depending on gender, religion, and job. Next, as a result of examining the difference in marital adjustment according to marriage-related factors in survey subjects, the significant difference was indicated in marital adjustment depending on marital motive and marital period. And, as a result of examining the difference in each of sub-factors of marital adjustment according to marriage-related factors, there was difference in sub-factors of marital adjustment depending on yes or no of children, marital form, marital motive, and marital period.
Second, as a result of analyzing difference in marital adjustment according to attachment to parents, the group with stable attachment to parents showed the more smooth adjustment in the relationship with the spouse after marriage. And, even in each of sub-factors of marital adjustment according to attachment to parents, the significant difference was indicated.
Third, as a result of analyzing the difference in marital adjustment according to psychological separation from parents, lower psychological separation from parents showed the low marital adjustment. And, as a result of analyzing sub-factors in marital adjustment according to psychological separation from parents, the group with low psychological separation level from parents was indicated to have low marital satisfaction and marital combination level.
Through the results of this study, it promoted the broad understanding about multi-dimensional properties, which are shown in the process of forming the newly-wedded marital adjustment, and the understanding about qualitative elements in marital relationship, which is the family's important sub-system. Also, the necessity is suggested, which is re-structured into the horizontal relationship in order to establish the functional relationship with the family-of-origin parents at the developmental stage of the newly-wedded couples. Namely, the necessity of developing independence is implied, in order to possibly make it clear in the boundary of the newly-wedded couple's family even while being intimate with parents.
