The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Resilience Family Program for dual income family mother who has an elementary school child. The mothers had participated in the program 8 times in total, which involved 4 contents: belief system, organizational pattern, communication process, self-control. And they were supposed to execute the assignment once a week to see how this program could affect their parenting self-efficacy, parent satisfaction and family relation. Resilience parenting program is the parenting program for enhancing family resilience and it is aimed at increasing satisfaction and self-efficacy for parenting, strengthening parental leadership and capability and promoting the healthy family functions.
This study was intended to investigate the effect of the resilience parenting program for dual income family mothers upon their parent satisfaction, parenting self-efficacy and family relation. Accordingly, ourfirst hypothesis was that for the dual income family mothers participating in the program, parent satisfaction, parenting self-efficacy and family relation would be improved, compared to before participation. Second hypothesis was that there would be a difference in parent satisfaction, parenting self- efficacy and family relation between the participant group and the control group.
To verify these study questions and hypotheses, this study was designed to divide into a participant group in the program and the non-participant control group, and at the beginning and end of the program, to compare the two groups through questionnaires on their parent satisfaction, family relation and parenting self-efficacy.
To see a difference between participant group and control group, study analysis was performed using non-parametric statistical method. This was because there were 8 cases in either of participant and control group and because the number of cases was too limited to assume the normal distribution of the population. The prior homogeneity was examined between participant and control group usingSPSS 12.0 program, and Mann-Whitney U test was used to see the difference between prior and posterior point variations in participant and control group. And Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Signed-Rank Test was used to see the difference between prior and posteriorpoints in participant group. The participants in the study were all dual income family mothers who have an elementary school child. Their age ranged from the late 30s to early and middle 40s while they had roughly 2 children each. The program carried on 2 hours each session for the total of 8 weeks from September until November, 2007.
The study results can be summed up as follows.
First, in the prior homogeneity test between participant and control group, there was no statistically significant difference shown in parent satisfaction, parenting self-efficacy and family relation, so both could be considered homogeneous groups with no difference between.
Second, after the participation, participant group in resilience parenting program revealed a statistically significant difference compared to before the participation in parenting self-efficacy and family relation, and on the whole their mean points improved, too. Only in parent satisfaction, the difference was shown not statistically significant. However, through the mean points between before and after participation, it was evident that the participants’ points improved on the whole.
Third, in comparison of mean prior and posterior variations between participant and control group, there was no statistically significant differencefound in parent satisfaction, parenting self-efficacy and family relation, but control group fell posterior in their mean points compared to prior, while participant group got better.
Therefore, in synthesizing the results of this study, it is possible to say that resilience parenting program has a positive effect on the dual income family. Considering this is a parenting program, a countermove should be made for parent satisfaction to improve statistically significantly, and considering this is a parental education, measures should be sought so that their husbands may participate in the education, too. In so doing, it is necessary to open a parental education program for dual income family on weekend hours and weekday evenings, and for paternal participation, the program needs to be managed under the host of business levels.
