Marketing managers who take care of advertising strategies regard determining propensity of advertising as one of the most important elements in advertising under such a severe competition. Consumers get information and purchase intentions from advertising. However, consumers encounter a lot of advertisements and they don't pay much attention to advertisements rather than do actively pay attention to them. As a result, information-only advertising about product attributes don't position in consumers' recognition structure, thus leading to poor advertising effects.
Likewise marketing managers are interested in selections of consumers' products and brands. They need to know whether the emotional advertising captures consumers among pervasive advertisements and whether the advertising is compatible with intentions of them. Consequently, we need to identify the effects of emotional advertising types on the brand attitude and purchase intention. First of all, we need to know the effects of emotional advertising types on the forming brand attitude and identify the difference in brand attitude according to consumer's specificity and involvement.
Based upon prior literatures, the objective of this study is to identify whether the emotional advertising types have an effect on the forming brand attitude focusing on the types of emotional advertisements. So, we set variables and formulated a research model. We formulated hypotheses on the basis of theoretical framework, and verified the hypotheses with questionnaires. We performed a pretest to get more accurate and objective results, thus leading to verify the reliability. Based upon the results, we performed a main study. We used the Likert scale to measure variables, and analyzed them by using the SPSS 12.0 for Windows. we performed a frequency analysis to see demographic characteristics and Cronbach's ? test to verity the reliability. We performed a simple regression analysis to verify relationships between types of emotional advertising and brand attitude, and a two-way ANOVA to test the effects of emotional advertising types including moderating variables which affect brand attitude significantly on brand attitude.
The results are as follows: First, both the positive emotion-appealing advertising and the negative emotion-appealing advertising have a positive effect on brand attitude. This means emotion-appealing advertisements have a positive effect on brand attitude even if it varies in materials and atmosphere. Second, the involvement doesn't have an effect on forming brand attitude. Generally speaking, the involvement makes it possible for consumers to concentrate on advertising information and to process a lot of information possible. However, the involvement in neither positive emotion-appealing advertising nor negative emotion-appealing advertising has an effect on forming brand attitude. Third, consumer's specificity doesn't have an effect on brand attitude. Typically consumers who have a lot of useful information on products and encounter advertising information regarding such products have a high degree of information-processing capacity. However, specificity of consumers' doesn't affect forming brand attitude.
Based upon key findings from this study, marketing managers are able to formulate marketing strategies. The emotional advertising has a positive effect on brand attitude. Prior literatures indicate that consumer characteristics such as involvement and specificity influence forming brand attitude in advertisements based upon recognition-based perspective. But it doesn't work in this study emotion-based perspective . We can infer from above that the emotional advertising can be used to affect brand attitude irrespective of involvement and specificity.
The major insights gained through the research suggest that marketing managers capitalize on emotional advertisements specific to their brand attribute, and make every effort to lead brand attitude to purchase intention.
