1960년대 한국농촌계몽영화에 관한 연구 = (A) study of korean rural enlightment film on 1960s

This research has been started from its value as text that can even read the age of 1960s time period by investigating enlightenment film even deeper.
I mostly looked up the modernity characteristic of enlightenment film of 1960. In 1960, most debates of movies are about 'modernization'. Age of 1960 was age of modernization by governmental project, and not only in part of film but also in the other several parts, there were tries of modernization. It was necessary to participating to the intellects and there were also polarizations among them.
It was confined that enlightenment movies were not the deviation from traditional lines to film directors who are in chare of managing citizens' modernities. Enlightenment film were on the extension line of author doctrine of Korean film directors, and were considered as tool of improving rural communities which are isolated from city, the main region of modernization. We can find both meanings of modernization from 1960s' rural enlightenment film.
General plots of 1960s' enlightenment movies were rebuilding country that had been ruined from 6.25 war and Japanese ruling period. If the country meant sorrow and scars from wars in 1950s, it was overcoming and rebuilding that country with civil wills and enthusiasms in 1960s. Therefore, many movies which has hard reality of rural community as their background in 1960s.
Main character of 1960s' rural enlightenment film was a woman. Also their role was not only just assisting men but also standing on the same status as that of men. In each film, these kind of roles of women can be easily seen.
Also there were enlightenment film which use children as subject material in 1960s. These kind of film have story lines of comparing adults' corrupted mind and children's innocent mind, and finally admiring children's innocent mind. Role of teachers and ability of education which fulfills children's hurted hearts from adults' unconcerns is well appeared in the film.
It was possible to find the try of breaking feudal fund system in the film. Rural residents were often forced to marry of convenience, betray the friends, and even die as starved. Usurers always took the role of villains and obstacles to modernization. The mains of modernization try to break these kind of fund system and, by changing people's consciousness, give the hope to rural community.
Enlightenment ideologists considered the people who live in only God's will as fools and included them in the target of modernization. People who had relied upon God should have decide whether keep living in God's will and go to the way of destruction or defend their selves in the way of knowledge and objective intelligence. In this period, Korean christianity had big role. It can be proved in the film.
When harbingers went to rural community for enlightenment, there were many assistances with them. It requires not only money, but also other labor forces in improving the condition of rural community.
One of the biggest factor of enlightenment film was modernity. Through the enlightenment film, the film can even offered the place for sharing solutions for social problems, not only just offering funnies.
Enlightenment film that especially made in 1960s when the modernization was on progress mostly and political power of president Park Jung-Hee was moved to citizens from military, are good model texts for looking up historical happens, and therefore it is worthy to find out the remains of history of 1960s modernization with these enlightenment film.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

‘계몽영화’라고 하면 국책영화나 문화영화와 같은 의미로 사용된다. ‘계몽성’이라는 용어는 선전성과 함께 영화사에서 자리 잡고 있었다. 이러한 역사성으로 인해 개념상의 혼란을 가져왔던 것이다. 개념상의 혼란은 영화의 평가마저 폄하시켜 ‘계몽영화’는 국책 영화적 성향을 갖고 있다 하여 그동안 영화의 내적인 내용과 그와 관련된 담론은 제대로 평가조차 받지 못하였던 것이 사실이다.
본 글은 그러한 계몽영화에 대한 기존의 연구에서 더 나아가, 계몽영화, 그 자체로도 시대를 읽어 갈 수 있는, 즉 60년대를 읽어갈 수 있는 충분한 텍스트로서의 가치가 있다고 생각하는 것에서 출발한다.
영화가 갖고 있는 정치적, 사회적, 교육적, 오락적 기능 중에서 계몽적 성격에 초점을 맞추어 1960년대 계몽영화가 갖고 있던 근대성에 대해 살펴볼 수 있다. 1960년대의 영화에 대한 논의 중 대부분은 ‘근대화’에 대한 것이다. 60년대라는 시대는 근대화가 국가의 프로젝트에 의해 진행되었고, 영화뿐만 아니라 모든 분야에서 제각기 근대화를 외치며 모두 노력하였다. 근대화 물결에 지식인들의 참여는 불가피하였고 참여정도에 따라 지식인들의 양극화를 불러일으켰다. 문학에서부터 일어난 지식인들의 근대화 작업에 대한 자세는 영화분야에서도 진지하게 요구되었다.
근대화로 인해 1960년대 영화계에서 ‘계몽’담론이 활발히 논의되었다. 역사적으로 볼 때 ‘계몽성’은 우리나라에 영화가 도입된 이후부터 존재한 것이다. 1920년대 총독부에 의해서 제작된 것이지만 <월하의 맹서>를 비롯한 계몽영화는, 제작주체의 이데올로기와는 상관없이 위생문제나 저축 장려 그리고 세금납부 등과 같은 근대화를 경험하기 위한 영화였다. 그러나 일제 말의 <집 없는 천사>와 같은 군국주의 시대 영화들은 불우한 가정환경에 좌절하지 말고 열심히 노력하여 극복하라는 계몽적 메시지를 갖고 있기는 하여도 황국신민화 등 군국주의 정부의 정책을 선전하는 식으로 영화가 그려져 계몽성을 흐리게 하였다. 광복 후 해방공간에서는 새조국 건설에의 희망으로 그 어느 때보다도 계몽담론이 활발히 논의되었다. 50년대는 예술영화와 영화의 상업적 발전에 계몽성은 자리를 내주어야 했지만 그 형태는 ‘반공’과 같은 주제로 나타났었고 비평에서도 사라지지 않는 생명력을 갖고 있다가 60년대는 근대화 작업과 함께 다시 한 번 분출하게 된 것이다.
1960년대는 영화법이 제정되고, 영화가 ‘산업’으로 인식되기 시작한 시기였다. 이러한 흐름에 따라 기업화와 외화수입쿼터를 따기 위해 계몽영화를 제작하였다는 일반적 견해와는 다르게 검열로 인한 내용적 통제가 강화됨에 따라 창작의 자유가 제한되어 계몽영화적 형태를 가질 수밖에 없었던 점을 알 수 있다.
또한 계몽영화는 강력한 통제 수단인 국가 정책의 부산물이 아닌, 지식인으로서 국민의 계몽성을 담당해야만 하는 한국영화감독들의 전통성의 맥락에서 크게 벗어나지 않는 것임을 알 수 있었다. 계몽영화는 한국 영화감독의 작가주의의 연장선상에 있는 것이며 당시 근대화의 주인공이었던 도시와 갈수록 벌어지는 격차 속에서 내동댕이 쳐있던 농촌현실을 개선하고자 하는 감독들과 영화인들의 의지가 그 속에 담겨져 있는 것이라 보았다. 이러한 제작환경에서 만들어진 60년대의 농촌 계몽영화의 일반적 흐름에서는 작가의식 이외에도 근대화의 양가적 의미 또한 찾을 수 있다.
1960년대 농촌계몽영화를 통해, 당시의 농촌과 도시의 모습, 계몽의 주체로서의 여성의 모습, 아동과 교육, 봉건적 자본관계의 타파, 무속신앙의 타파, 집단의식의 성장 등을 살펴볼 수 있다.
계몽성이 분출하기 시작한 60년대에 만들어진 계몽영화는 박정희 정권이 군정에서 민정으로 이양되는 과정에 제작되었고, 당시 근대화 열풍 속에서 논의된 많은 역사적 사안들을 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 텍스트로서 60년대 초부터 후반까지 제작된 농촌계몽영화를 통해 근대화의 진행과정과 근대화로 인한 전환된 삶의 흔적을 찾아내는 것도 의미 있는 일이다.
60년대의 농촌계몽영화는 70년대에도 이어지고, 70년대에는 가속한 도시화로 인해 발생한 도시문제를 다루는 도시계몽영화가 등장한다. 도시화의 과정은 이미 60년대의 영화에서 그 모습을 드러내고 있으며 근대화로 인해 발생하는 모든 문제점의 근본 원인이 60년대에서부터 시작하는 것을 영화를 통해 우리는 확인할 수 있다. 60년대 농촌계몽영화의 생산성이 컸음을 다시한번 알 수 있다. 농촌계몽영화는 80년대에는 그 모습을 찾아보기 힘들다. 하지만 계몽성의 의미를 다시한번 되새겨 볼 때 그 모습이 시대마다 그 특성을 달리하여 영화 속에서 존재하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.
