The purpose of this study was to find out how synthetic musical activity affects development and musical talent of three-year-olds. The following research questions were investigated.
First, is there any difference in the development of children (body, recognition, language, sociality and emotions) between the test group which underwent synthetic musical activity and the comparison group which underwent general musical activity?
Second, are there any difference in musical talent (listening, rhythm expression, singing, playing musical instruments and musical originality) of children between the two groups?
Subjects of the study were 50 three-year-old children in two nurseries in Kyung-buk. The test group and comparison group were organized equally considering gender and home background.
Research tools were the "Growth Test of Infants and Young Children" developed by Korea Education Development and produced by Dae-kyo, and a musical advancement test produced by Loten and Walley (1979), adapted by Choi Young Sook(1982). These tests were modified and supplemented for the level of three-year-olds to measure growth and musical talent.
The experiment was carried for 15 weeks. While the testing group practiced synthetic musical activity, the comparison group practiced general musical activity.
The procedure of this study was carried out in order a total of 20 times, once or twice a week throughout 13 weeks, and pre-test and post-test.
Averages and standard deviation to examine the distribution of growth and development of musical talent were calculated. To find out how synthetic musical activity affects growth and musical talent, the data were analyzed with ANCOVA.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, the test group participating in a synthetic musical activity had improved more compared to the comparison group. In other words, subordinate elements of progress such as sociality, emotions, body and recognition development had improved.
Second, the test group with the synthetic musical activity had more improved the musical talent. That is, listening, rhythm expression, playing musical instruments and musical originality, had improved, more than those of the comparison group.
This result means that the synthetic musical activity is an effective activity which can improve development and musical talent of children. Also the synthetic musical activity can be used to elevate development and musical talent.
