<Abstract>
This thesis defines the temporal range from B.C. 2nd century when the ancient glass bead emerged to 6th century A.D., and the manufacturing technique of glass beads based on the observation of artifacts from the viewpoint of molding and processing. Also, this study try to find out the raw material of glass beads, and chemical composition of ancient glass beads. To find the manufacturing technique, I tried to find the characteristic of each period, the archaeological meaning, the foreign exchange, the route of inflow, the production and consumption of the glass beads.
Various sizes, shapes and colors of ancient glass beads have been excavated from various regions, including the ones made in the Iron Age. It is believed that the glasses were imported to Korea around 2nd century B.C. as the first glass beads were found at Hapsongri site in Buyeo. Major manufacturing technique of glass beads include ‘Drawn Technique’ or ‘Tube-cut Technique’, ‘Dipping Technique’, ‘Mould Technique’, ‘Wound Technique’ and others. The glass beads were produced with the same technique according to their form or kind.
From the analysis of glass mould and glass crucible found with iron wares at the same site, we can confirm that the glass was produced along with steels. Use of glass mould in the ‘Mould Technique' brought mass production of glass beads.
Specifically, new methods of production emerged with wider use of materials and techniques, such as inscribing the patterns into the glass beads with gold leaf glass bead, colored glass bead, inlaid glass bead and etc. Meanwhile, floral shape beads and segmented beads with more sophisticated and aesthetic shape also appeared.
Moreover, glass mold was instrumental in bringing about mass production using the ‘Mould Technique'. Variety of glass relics that have been excavated so far indicate that the glass product in Korean Peninsular can be classified into ornamental use and container use. In addition, the glass composition and production method were diverse regardless of region, which implies that the Korean peninsula had a same glass cultural sphere.
Ancient glass beads can be studied by dividing into three periods according to their distinct features. Period of incoming is from introduction to the settlement of ancient glass. During the period of settlement, various coloring methods using transition metal and diverse manufacturing systems were used for glass beads. Glass beads were used as decoration with incantational meaning or as to show authority during trades. Lastly, in the period of deterioration, gold and silver decoration and representations of yin-yang, five elements and the universe were used in the production of glass beads. Three kingdoms concentrated on exchanging the techniques and importing glass beads.
Glass was imported via the maritime route which was used to export the iron to China and Japan from Kimhae area where iron was produced abundantly. Glass beads of southwestern part of Korea were mostly the output of maritime exchange.
Glass containers are rarely found in Goguryeo, Baekje, and Gaya, whereas large amount has been found in the ancient tombs of Shilla, which provides an insight into the characteristics of culture of Shilla. All of glass containers are typically late Roman glass, suggesting that Silla exchanged with Rome through the Silk Road.
Korea has promoted, accepted and developed culture through a vivid exchange of civilizations with China, Japan and Mid East since the ancient times. Furthermore, the exchange of civilization is not merely a proof of the commercial trade but also the overall social and cultural exchange.
